Hey there everyone!

It's been a nice run, but all good things come to an end as they say.

This nice thing comes to an end on Jul 2nd, 2026 which is when the domain expires and I've decided to not renew it.

It's been a nice run and I'm grateful to all the active users of our small Fediverse home!

click here if you're interested in the reasonAs for the reason for this decision, it's because Lemmy and the Threadiverse in general didn't turn out into what I envisioned it would be.

For a hot minute it was honestly great but eventually all that remained was tankies propaganda and depressing news. And probably a few non-political communities that sadly don't really offset it for me.

I was pondering on keeping it running even if I don't really use it that much anymore, but then Hetzner announced a significant price change (and you can bet that Lemmy is an unoptimized resource hog) which is not the reason on its own, but the proverbial last straw.

So yeah, that's it I guess. I promised that if the instance ever goes down, I'll let everyone know with enough time and I believe I managed to do it.

I'll maintain the instance until it expires and I'll keep on moderating it of course but it's probably a good time to start looking for a new Threadiverse home.

Yet again, thank you very much to everyone who has been part of this instance! And to many of the friendly admins of other instances!

The Threadiverse may have too many tankies and not enough active communities, but with Reddit becoming greedier and greedier by the day, it's the only viable alternative.

Blocking .ml, Hexbear, and Lemmygrad solves a lot of the tankie problem, but it could certainly still use more people to support non-news or politics communities.

Your contribution to the Fediverse and Lemmy was bigger than many users. You will be missed.

Who knows what the future has in store for us. Perhaps you'll be compelled to return to Lemmy in the future, perhaps not. Either way, I wish you well.

Oh bummer, that's me....

Thanks for letting me know, I'll end my recurring donation when it goes down.

I understand the lack of political nuance, and everything having to be hard right or hard left, but that's the way we have been programmed, and how our algorithms are programmed, something we have to accept because I honestly don't see the path to changing it.

Thank you for the support so far!

Well, the only path I see is to not participate which is what I did when Facebook let me down years ago, then the same with Reddit and now Lemmy.

Ah. I just signed up! But that's just how the fediverse goes.

Thanks for offering the instance! I know hosting must be a crazy huge project!

Do you have another recommendation for an instance that won't ban me for saying something like "I think marijuana use should be strictly regulated."

[-] Alfredolin@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 hours ago

There should be several? E.g. sopuli?

[-] rikudou@lemmings.world 6 points 7 hours ago

Can't say I have one, as that was pretty much the niche (freedom of speech where you're allowed to say anything as long as it's not illegal or hurting other people) I tried to fill because it was empty. Haven't really checked newer instances, so don't know if there's one with similar mindset.

[-] 1dalm@lemmings.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Well, I appreciate your effort.

[-] Jerry@feddit.online 2 points 6 hours ago

You really were banned on other instances for saying marijuana use should be strictly regulated?

[-] 1dalm@lemmings.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Not whole Lemmy instances, but I got banned from the r/millennials subreddit for that about a year ago. I really wasn't even being that antagonistic about it. I was just sharing scholarly peer reviewed articles with people that refused to believe that marijuana might have some negative side effects. Didn't even get a warning. Boom, perma ban.

[-] Jerry@feddit.online 3 points 6 hours ago

Sigh. Yeah, that's not right to get banned for having a different opinion than a moderator.

Mastodon a bit better, at least less tankies.

[-] 1dalm@lemmings.world 6 points 8 hours ago

tankies

I tried out Mastodon for a bit, I had a different experience.

Unfortunately there really just isn't much of a space online for a political moderate. If you aren't true hard-line right or true hard-line left then there is just no opportunity for dialog online.

[-] rikudou@lemmings.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Ain't that the truth! As someone who's center-left for the most part, I feel that every day.

But my real issue is pretty much that Lemmy has almost no other content besides political one - I'm fine not fitting in with the online masses politically but I kinda can't find anything else to do on here.

[-] 1dalm@lemmings.world 4 points 8 hours ago

I wouldn't even consider myself "center left". I'm like 95% straight down the line liberal.

But because I believe crazy things like "maybe some abortions are actually ethically dubious", and "numerous good rigorous studies have demonstrated that religion is generally socially good and healthy actually", and "a well regulated capitalism is a good economic system actually."

So, you know, I'm a Nazi sympathiser.
