Jane Caro It is with real sadness that I have decided to withdraw from this year’s Adelaide Writers Festival. I was, as always, thrilled to be invited and was very much looking forward to the very feminist panels I was asked to participate in. Frankly, we have never needed such conversations more. However, I am opposed to censoring any writer who deals with complex & controversial issues forthrightly. I think the decision by the Adelaide Festival Board was an attack on the very things that make writers festivals the amazing events they are. I would like to send my support to Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah. I would also like to send my commiserations to the equally forthright director of the festival Dr Louise Adler, whose willingness to engage with a wide range of ideas courteously and respectfully is a hallmark of her career. I also want to acknowledge the efforts of everyone working to make the 2026 AWF the success it has always been. It must be devastating to watch all that hard work & enthusiasm crumble around their ears. Authoritarianism is rising all around us. It thrives on controlling & squashing & censoring ideas it does not like. I refuse to participate in that.

My lawyer has served a second concerns notice for defamation on South Australia's Premier Peter Malinauskas in relation to false claims he made about me in a radio interview last week. Rather than reflect on the harm he has caused me, he has doubled down leaving me no choice but to see this through until justice is served. @randaafattah

Letter in The Australian, January 13, 2026 It's clearly Louise Adler who has wounded Adelaide Writers' Week - not the board, nor the South Australian government. Three years ago, to the week, The Australian published my letter to the editor, calling for Adler's resignation - but for writers to stay. Back then, she programmed eight pro-Palestinian activists, with zero alternative voices. One, Mohammed El-Kurd, compared Israel to Nazis and defended someone who tweeted that she wanted "to kill every mothett.king Zionist", "curse the Jews", and who supported Hamas. Others weren't far behind. Adler well knew that including Randa Abdel-Fattah ("if you are a Zionist you have no claim or right to cultural safety") would endanger the institution.
