Are injuries really that common? I'll go skiing to Zermatt in December. First timer.

They're really not, it's pretty hard to get seriously hurt with skiing. The first thing you get taught is how to stop, and if you ever feel like you're not in control you need to just throw yourself down on the ground.
Skiing at least in Austria is nowhere near as scummy as this post indicates either, and you won't get sunburn if you wear proper clothing.
If you're renting skis you probably want to rent them where you're skiing so you don't have to carry them on public transport or anywhere, which is a nightmare.
Although they are not super common, one should always be aware that going downhill at high speed is still risky. My mom's friend lost their teenage daughter when she hit a tree around a turn and died.

When I first started snowboarding, I was a broke college student. Just go late afternoon and buy or ask for day pass tickets from people leaving. I know its illegal, but a college student gotta do what they gotta do to enjoy the slopes.

Rent skis for 50$? It is cheaper to just buy them!
I do some pretty reckless shit for fun, but skiing has never appealed to me in any way.
I tried snowboarding once.. I think the rental snowboard was shit, the front of the board kept catching and I'd go sailing through the air.. lucky I didn't break my neck.. I was so done with it
Is this some sort of rich mountain-goers joke? I've never been burned on the ski hill, even as someone who burns very easily
East vs west
Out west you're at such high elevation you can totally get a pretty bad sunburn from skiing.
Meanwhile I live in the east and ski every chance I get and 70% of the population around here is vitamin d deficient because we see the sun 5 hours a week.
If you live in the northeast and ski or surf then you love the sport more than anyone on the west coast. Those spoiled people out west with their good weather, good conditions, and clean breaks would never go out in what we go out in.
