Yeap. Russian skitzo political landscape be like: we got volunteers from CPRF on the frontlines, battlepriests, squad of football fans, squad of nazbols, and...oh, right, squad of anime fans.

I seem to remember something about a community of anime fans involved in humanitarian aid called Орда (Horde) too. 21st century war in Europe be like. And, speaking of Horde

Also TIL Asuka from Evangelion is low key nazi dogwhistle in AFU.

Asuka is based, why do nazis use her?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

She was an officer in the Luftwaffe before joining the Evangelion service.

There is official artwork of her in a straight Nazi Luftwaffe uniform.

There are also several swastikas in the show itself.

Bro wtf, they ain't have to do that to her smh.

Also I might have missed the swastikas in the show, I've seen it multiple times and haven't ever seen any

There are a bunch in the manga version that they scrubbed for the show. With the 7 eyes symbol side by side.

Also while this is a fan blog, it also points out several extremely strange anti-Semitic and Nazi influences and coincidences.

Hm, that first link seems to be from the Great Teacher Onizuka manga, instead of Evangelion, though the Seele symbol is apparently a reference.

Evangelion takes a lot of references and imagery from religion, from Christianity to Judaism what with stuff like angels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Adam and Lilith, etc, but I honestly think it's a reach to directly connect it to Nazism and antisemitism.

Japan was on the side of the Nazis during WWII and never actually apologized for their atrocities, but would that have shown up so blatantly in their media? I'm not sure.

The official media of her in Nazi uniform when she was born in the 21st century is really baffling to me.

Many people in Japan have no idea who Hitler even was. Or at most they know him as “the guy who did something bad once but I don’t know what exactly”.

WW2 is a very suppressed topic in Japan.

Also Onizuka was worked on by several members who also worked on the Neon Genesis team.

FWIW the manga version is very separate, even if it technically started beforehand.

E: read the link, yea that's a bit sussy

The fuck, how was she in Luftwaffe when she was straight up born in 21th century?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

No one knows. “Artistic liberty” I guess. It’s an extremely strange piece of lore they shoehorned in.

What the fuck

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why does she look, like, thirteen?

I hate this kind of shit from either side. This is war, not a game, don't drop references.

Same energy as old people berating nurses and doctors on the job doing anything other than running around. As it stands this conflict is part of their life, and to the extent that they aren't being chauvinistic what they do with their time is none of our business.

Unfortunately, the cultural degradation of capitalism has spread pretty much everywhere

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah that's true and all but I can't wait to yell 'it's punishment time' after Elensky's trial for war crimes ends
