TL:DW It's a 54:20 video of Fake Linus interviewing with Linus Torvalds. It goes over Linus's views on hardware choice, questions about Linux and several community questions.

The video is long, but it's a good listen.

I refuse to watch a video with Linus Sebastian. I'll get better tech advice from my cat tripping on catnip.

[-] john_t@piefed.ee 21 points 2 months ago

Do you mean buying computers worth thousands of dollars doesn't make you a computer expert? I'm shocked. Shocked!

[-] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago

You know, I was fine with LTT for a while (many years ago). I knew they were clowns, but they seemed genuine and well intentioned. Their first Linux challenge made me raise my eyebrows at them, because I was a long time Linux user and knew much of what they said was either off the mark or disingenuous.

Then their storage server video came out and I almost fell off my chair with the levels of bafoonery I had watched. Even the real experts that helped them out had a hard time keeping their words civil while discussing the postmortem of the situation. That's when I lost respect for LTT and Linus Sebastian as a tech "expert".

Then all the other stuff about the lies, the made up metrics, the years of garbage test data from negligent and lazy practices, and the cherry on top which was the Billet Labs thing. The arrogance of Linus Sebastian to do the test in bad faith on a GPU that was explicitly stated by Billet Labs to not be the target device, and then Linus whine on the WAAAH Show that it would cost him too much money to do a proper retest, and then just selling off the prototype. Then doubling down twice in a forum post that LINUS SEBASTIAN is somehow the victim in all of this! Poor Poor Linus Sebastian.

And the moron couldn't even do an apology video without making some wise-ass joke. Couldn't read the room the one time he needed to do it.

He's just an ass-hat.

[-] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 months ago

He's also vocally anti-labor organization and anti-union.

Arguably he's also pro workplace sexual harassment, but hey, he made an apology video so that's no big deal.

[-] artyom@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He’s also vocally anti-labor organization and anti-union.

I hear this all the time but people who say this can never seem to find a source for it. What he has said is that if his employees felt like they needed to form a union, then he would have failed as an employer. He's gone on the record as pro-union many times.

Arguably he’s also pro workplace sexual harassment

This one though, that's new. I don't suppose you have a source for that one either?

Thanks for summarizing all that. I knew most of it but forgot some of those details. He is an asshat indeed. I've been saying that for a couple years. Somehow every time I comment about him online multiple people jump in to say he did nothing wrong. Surprised that's not happened here yet honestly.

[-] kuro@piefed.social 19 points 2 months ago

I wholeheartedly agree with you.

[-] kieron115@startrek.website 5 points 2 months ago

I watch it for the same reason I watch William Osman. They do a lot of fun bullshit videos like trying to watercool a server rack with a swimming pool.

[-] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 4 points 2 months ago

I'm more concerned about the sexual harassment.

[-] DolphinMath@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Are you referring to the sexual harassment claim that was alleged to have happened via another employee, but never substantiated?

[-] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 4 points 2 months ago

Yes, and I appreciate that you pressed the issue because I never heard what ultimately transpired, since I never really cared for the channel before that. But I see they hired a 3rd party to investigate and the conclusion was that none of the allegations were substantiated. Though I haven't found any mention of a further response from the employee that made the allegations.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Then don't watch it I guess

I don't really see a reason to announce it here

[-] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Virtue signalling is very important to some people.

TLDW on his hardware recommendations?

  • chill interview, recommended to watch
  • hardware recommendations see below
[-] teft@piefed.social 25 points 2 months ago

The parts from the build according to the youtube description:
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9960X
GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO D Motherboard
Samsung SSD 9100 PRO 2TB SSD
Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 Cooler
Intel Arc B580 GPU
Fractal Design Torrent E-ATX Case
Seasonic PRIME TX-1600 1600W 80+ Titanium PSU
ASUS ProArt Display PA32QCV 31.5" 6K HDR Monitor

[-] Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 2 months ago

ECC ram. Hardware stability was the main factor.

Real Linus mentions spending days hunting an instability bug in the kernel to have it turn out as bad ram on his pc.

[-] tuxiqae@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 months ago

That's such a weird build, why have that PSU? That build doesn't get even close to requiring 1600W, the CPU + GPU are at around 550W together

[-] waitmarks@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

Torvalds likes his computer quiet so that psu with so much overhead, the fan probably won’t ever turn on.

It's a perfect build because it validates my personal choice to almost always use fractal design cases.

Previously I was primarily going off of vibes, which have now been upgraded to objective truths.

I think the most interesting bit was his stance on ECC memory. Basically he says everyone should be using it.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Blame Intel for making that a bold statement. Their refusal to allow ECC on anything except expensive server SKUs for decades set data integrity back substantially.

Fuck Intel.

Worth stating that this video was much more about the interview, rather than giving hardware recommendations.

[-] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 4 points 2 months ago

There's a parts list on the YT description.

God damn the LTT hate is huge in this channel. I don't really get it, but shit you guys really don't like a tech review channel.

When I posted this, there wasn't a single comment about the actual interview with Linus Torvalds. That's a crazy amount of vitriol.

[-] domi@lemmy.secnd.me 9 points 2 months ago

I don't hate LTT but they are mostly an entertainment channel nowadays, not a review channel.

Their reviews are focused on sponsored products, sometimes wrong and most of the time don't go into much depth. Not to mention the countless ads, sponsorships and clickbait.

If somebody likes them, more power to them, but I don't go to LTT when I need information about something.

Something gets popular, people have to demonstrate how unique and sparkly they are by going against it, it's a tale as old as time. I watch their videos occasionally and understand he's neither demon nor god. But try listening to their WAN Show podcast and tell me he's not (mostly) genuine and open...

[-] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

It's a huge deal that a youtuber as big as LTT is promoting Linux. This is how we break into the mainstream.

[-] Hazzard@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

No kidding, it's intense. I like the channel well enough, and find they've handled their various scandals to my satisfaction, at least. And yes, it's 100% more entertainment than deep technical content I'm gonna learn from, but whatever, guilty pleasures aren't some horrible sin, and it's a better use of my time than reality TV. Being such a large channel does also get them access to some really worthwhile stuff now and again, like major factory tours, or Linus Torvalds, and that is stuff that's really worth my time.

All of that said, I assume there's lots of people here like myself, but it just ain't worth jumping out of the woodwork for the guy. I like him, but not nearly enough to cast myself against this much vitriol for his sake.

This is the coolest video they've done in ages, and Linus Torvalds seems like such an excellent, genuine guy. He gives really thoughtful answers to even some of the silly joke questions, and it's great. I super appreciate his perspective, and he interviews excellently.

One of the best videos I've seen on youtube. Torvalds is just cool af.

[-] Gnugit@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago

Is there somewhere i can watch this without giving Fake Linus monetary gain?

[-] Cris_Color@lemmy.world 23 points 2 months ago

I mean ublock origin seems like a simple answer

[-] Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago

invidious, archive.org

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

This is so cool

Like how they did community questions

[-] Uncut_Lemon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Why does any even watch Linus Tech Tips, it feels like most his facts are based on his opinion, rather than any grounded reality, while he will flaunts it as fact. Then goes and make noob mistakes with his setups, while acting like computer Jesus. A fake interview only perpetuates this state of him making up content, to what ever pleases his himself and his patron audience. Truth only gets in the way of a good story, and this guy seems to know how to spin the tallest of stories

[-] Starski@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Wtf even is a fake interview lol, he had a lengthy talk with Linus Torvalds in where they discussed a wide variety of things and asked him numerous questions, how is that a fake interview
