Oh no, its Generations all over again. They got a second almost perfect ending. Thats a rare thing. Most shows dont even get one, and nobody but Futurama gets three.

(Hopefully 4 now)

Generations was a “passing the torch” movie - it was an ending for the TOS crew, passing the movie torch to the TNG crew, and making way for a wide screen Enterprise as well. I guess you could say it was a botched second ending for Kirk though, that would be fair

It’s definitely not the strongest Trek movie but it’s also technically an odd-numbered film (being the seventh) so it makes sense that it’s not as good as it could have been

That said, isn’t the Picard ending #3 already? All Good Things was ending 1, Nemesis was ending 2, Picard is now ending 3, so another movie would be a fourth?

Poor man.

He signed on thinking TNG would bomb (which it almost did), he'd make some quick cash, get out, and go back to doing theater like he really wanted.

Instead, TNG ran for the better part of a decade, it is by far his best-known role, and the show spawned several movies and a whole 'nother TV series focused on his character multiple decades later.

Patrick Stewart's career did not proceed as planned.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He could leave at any moment, even with contracts. Hell "Best of Both Worlds" literally had Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes in the middle of contract negotiations - either one could have walked away at that moment and the story was ready for that. (Picard obviously, would have been consumed, Ryker was offered his own command).

It's a bit condescending to say that we should pity him because of TNG. He's said multiple times that while his initial reaction was what you said, he's enjoyed it from there on.

The vast, vast majority of people don't get jobs and think "Okay here is where my career is going", they are along for the ride. Many, if not most people find that they enjoy other careers more than others and swap, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Don't pity a man because he found something he loved doing and kept doing it, we should celebrate that.

I think the commenter you're replying to was ironic?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I actually disagree. While that was his initial goal, his career spanned more and went farther than I'm sure he could have ever imagined. I think he's rather proud of the roles that he's been in and there's a reason why he's fought for, and been a champion of, Star Trek.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah, no. They should leave well enough alone and retire the TNG cast. They did the "All good things..." poker shot, it's time to move on.

That being said, there's lots of untapped potential to revisit characters from DS9 and Voyager... key word is revisit, not brutally murder on screen please. Picard S3 didn't feel the need to kill off one of the TNG cast members for shock or emotional value.

Ro Laren and Elizabeth Shelby have entered the chat.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

you say that like Trek was never known for killing off side characters lol

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or, how about that, maybe consider not doing that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Picard left the TNG storyline state in such a decent and settled place, feels like another story would only risk ruining things. Feels like the series is already in a good-as-it-gets state and can only go down from here, unless they go for total spin-off.

But I'll still watch it even if it sucks, which the people with $$ in their eyes know so...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I don't know if I would. I guess people are curious though?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Oh, let's not. I think the PIC season 3 finale is a fine farewell to TNG crew all being together. I'd love to see individual stories about the TNG main cast, post-PIC. Riker and Troi, and Kestra. Geordi La Forge and his never seen wife. Worf being Worf -- pondering, fighting, snoozing after fighting. Data redux. And, I'm always up for more of Picard. So, I'm a "yes!" for seeing more individual stories of TNG main characters. I can do without another "getting the band back together," curtain call for the TNG main cast as a whole.

@Nmyownworld @ValueSubtracted

I do think season 3 was a nice farewell, but I would be open to another movie. Who am I kidding, I’d absolutely be there, watching it in one of those theaters with recliner seats. Might even smuggle in a thermos of Earl grey for the occasion.

I'm very torn on this. Ordinarily, I'm in the camp that more Trek is always a good thing. But then Picard season 3 felt like such a special send-off to the TNG crew - it took them two decades but they finally fixed the mistakes of Nemesis and gave us a sense of closure on the TNG story.

If they made another movie then I would totally watch it, but I can't see how they would give us an ending that's better than what we got, and I fear trying to hit the same nostalgia notes once again would just end up cheapening where Picard left off.

For me, more content while we can have it is never a bad thing. If we don’t like it we don’t have to rewatch it. But I’d rather risk it for a chance at another great story with characters I love.

But I know I am in the minority. Heck, I even enjoyed Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I really feel like all the TNG content as of late has felt so recycled and fan service without bringing much to the table. Trek is always the best when it is commentary on an optimistic view of humanity told on the stage of space exploration and geopolitics. "Borg changelings...but different Borg than the Borg we did last season or the season before that" isn't it. Also, Trek always balanced stakes so well...either the ship or the planet they were on was at risk, or maybe a tense situation with a known galactic enemy, but galaxy-extiction events were rare and built up to. We are now 3 for 3 of galaxy ending events that were only averted by having one decrepid old celebrity in the right place and time...it's lost me.

Gimmie a DS9 movie or GTFO.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Ben Sisko on the big screen, hell yeah!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

S3 of Picard had everything I hoped for and it ended so perfectly. No need to get the band back together formally, but Star Trek: Legacy with occasional drop ins from the TNG cast (and PLEASE DS9 & Voy as well) would be perfect.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I see what everyone is saying. It would probably suck. But maybe it wouldn't!!!!?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I know there's a lot of people saying no, but I'd be okay with it. I'd also be okay with them leaving it where they did with the Picard finale. However to move forward with the Star Trek universe timeline we're going to need some kind of ending to Jean-luc's character and crew, might as well be in a movie and on the original actors' terms.

I've heard the last season of picard wasn't bad but i desperately do not want a movie based on that show in the first place. It got most things wrong about what makes trek. Trek. Rather get a movie from the Orville team.
