Let me try to clear up some confusion & rancor based on "Strange Planet" being added here a couple weeks ago:

First of all, the sidebar is not meant to strictly consist of other BD comics. Rather, it's meant to be a mix of the most useful BD sites we can imagine, plus a mix of very good and useful other review-places & hot sources.

TBH, as this community evolves, it will probably involve some shuffling around of these things, as we do already have a thread of various goodies.

In any case, "Subnormality" is without doubt, one of the top-three continuing webcomics in history, alongside SMBC and XKCD. The difference is that this one doesn't seem to get seen very often due to it's overlarge-size and unusual nature. Hence, why I chose to list it here, as meanwhile 'everyone' knows SMBC & XKCD.

Hope I made better sense here than last time. 😅

I disagree with you, but I feel for you, and I appriciate what you do.

It must be difficult to try to manage expectations based on a more broad love for a specific part of a medium (non superhero comics with distinct artstyles) that has a geographic association (EUROPEAN graphic novels).

I understand you want to include the excellent webcomic subnormality. My opinion is that it is not a european graphic novel.

But you're the mod and submit the majority of content.

I appriciate the work you put into this place.

My opinion is that it is not a european graphic novel.

While I appreciate your input, I never suggested that it was.

TBC-- the sidebar is a special exemption upon the overall mission of EGN, in which we try to accumulate the best resources we can for reades, and list the very best creative work of our colleagues. That's what the listing is for.

Still... I suppose if it helps people understand the mission better, it might be changed from "KEY SITES & COMMUNITIES" to something more like "FRIENDS"?

I don't know... but I'm frankly a bit tired of this kind of uproar.

but I’m frankly a bit tired of this kind of uproar.

hey man, the majority of the tone of my message is "you run this joint, and I appreciate all you do, and it's up to you what the rules are".

... but things are things. It's only my opinion, no one else has chimed in.

I support your choice no matter what because you're putting in the majority of the hard work and I only look once in a while and don't contribute anything of note. I know my place.

Hermano. 🤜🤛

Just to be clear, this place isn't about me; it's about the topic matter. So It's good for me and the project to be checked, in general.

Matey, I apogolise for being a bit 'pissy' based on how things went the last time I announced a change. That was my bad. My opinion is that critiques are generally valuable, and help lead to useful change.

Ugh, I've been running on chronically low-sleep recently, and shouldn't have been combative like that. Sorry about that, Skullgrid.

don't worry my man, it's all good. just trying to help you keep perspective. Again, it's your place, you can choose what it's like.

What's the motive? To give additional views to those people, or to help people understand that "If you like Strange planet, you may also like European comics"? Or something else?

Good questions!
Listing stuff on the sidebar does indeed have multiple aims:

  • If you like BD, then you might also like X.
  • Yes, if those links get more views then I'd be happy, as they're high-quality content IMO.
  • In general, across this project, we're trying to collect as much quality links and content as possible. As with most other subs & communities, the sidebar is used to list similar projects that aren't *exactly* like the main topic.

Again, it's your place, you can choose what it's like.

TBC (to be clear)-- the ultimate aim here is to build a self-sustaining community. I may be the founder, but I'm not going to be around forever (health issues plus living in an increasingly dangerous region), so I'd like to see this place one day be able to generate its own content and do its own moderation, whether I'm still around at that point or not.

I hope you get the health issues and living situation at least stablised and improved. It's great to hear that you want to be a Cincinnatus figure though.

I'd go for just splitting them into "BD" , "Eurocomix" and "Similar works". That way you can promote each type of content with a clear communication of what they are. Hell, you might even encourage further participation and spread of artform by asking for dedicated labelling of submissions, so that people that want to share similar stuff from other regions feel more at ease of doing so.

Cincinnatus figure

Interesting guy! I didn't remember who he was exactly, so I looked him up. Quite the anti-fascist it seems; something we could obviously use more of in today's world.

...so that people that want to share similar stuff from other regions feel more at ease of doing so.

Thanks for the suggestion, and it's something to think about. As a matter of fact, there are a bunch of colorful labels I've already added in the sidebar, such as: "Asterix CortoMaltese fine art Gaston Jodorowsky LuckyLuke MAILBOX Moebius NSFW REVIEWS Sillage(Wake) Smurfs Spirou Thorgal Tintin" and "Trondheim," but IIRC only PieFed users can see them. What about you, over on LW? Can you see them there?

The "BD" vs. "Eurocomix" vs. "Similar works" is an interesting idea. I guess for purists, it might hold some importance. Actually, the reason I worded things the way I did in the early sidebar text was so that we didn't have to get bogged down by too many labels. But actually, I've been working on a poll, so I think maybe I'll throw this as a question to the poll-takers. Not sure when it'll be done, but probably within a month or so.

nope, can't see shit capn. here's my view :

Lemmy might collapse soon with mass migrations to piefed. the guys running communities that are sick of the heads splitting funds between lemmy dev and lemmy.ml and are starting to leave.

Turns out if you keep banning people with centrist opinions , people start leaving.

Dang, it's actually a little worse than I thought when logging in from Lemmy. Can't even see the hash-tagged stuff, and it looks like the pinned WEBCOMIX post isn't showing?

Lemmy might collapse soon with mass migrations to piefed...

If so, hopefully it won't be too many to this instance in particular. My old instance (Lemm.ee) closed down earlier this year, most of due to too many users and not enough volunteer staff to handle the typical amount of AH-behavior.

“BD” refers to Franco-Belgian comics, but let's open things up to include ALL Euro comics and GN's. Euro-style artistry from around the world is also welcome. ^^

-BD = "Bandes dessinées"
-BDT = Bedetheque
-GN = graphic novel
-LBK = Lambiek
-LC = "Ligne claire"
