Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

In late breaking garden news: went out for the first time since my trip away last month and there's a small (1m) swan plant back beside the lemon tree that somehow has two chrysalises on it and two caterpillars since I last looked!!!

I'm over the moon, really thought we weren't getting anyone this year.

Rainy day and there's a dove huddled in the plum tree, just staring at the house. I love doves.

Wow, that feels late for chrysalises! Our were all gone a month back. Terrible weather here so it was lucky they were.

Yeah if it gets much colder we will have to bring them inside to finish developing. But it's comparatively warm up here.

Yeah I hear you can grow coffee up your way, must be tropical!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I didn't know that! A lot of bananas and pineapples though.

My Dad could grow bananas in Taranaki, though they always used to start to fruit just before winter and then they would rot on the plant so I guess that doesn't really count.

The coffee place is this one: https://www.ikaruscoffee.co.nz/nz-grown-coffee--tea.html

I've wanted to try it since I learned about it a couple of years back, but I don't think I can justify the price.

Omg interesting!!! I wonder if that means theoretically they can grow cacao too? Local chocolate!

You can grow a few viable bananas for personal supply at least as far south as the Coromandel but I was thinking things like this plantation.

I'm pretty sure my Dad got the idea for growing bananas from someone he knew successfully growing them in Taranaki, but it does seem pretty tricky that far south. I was also the one who eventually had to dig the plant out, would not recommend.

That plantation you linked looks awesome!

Though I'll try not to think too hard about why you might be able to grow tropical fruit in NZ now when you couldn't before. I'm guessing over time we will see this possible further and further south.

Definitely. It's been really shocking seeing all the changes to frost lines etc over time.

Your dad sounds cool.

Well, today is my last day at work before starting a well earned holiday - somehow I have managed to accumulate a full 2 months off

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Sweet gig! Hope you enjoy 🫡

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Wow, sounds like it's about time you had a holiday!

Got big plans or just a staycation?

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

thinking of heading down south for a few weeks at some point with the kids

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Hope you have an awesome time!

Looking at another camper or two this weekend to make the trip in (have looked a one and a bus so far)

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Exciting! My recommendation is get something warm!

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Nice! If my memory is correct, @[email protected] (who hasn't been around recently so probably won't see this) runs a business on the West Coast that does caving trips for all ages. Something to consider!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Rad! I'd love to get down there again

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks @dave, yes indeed - pretty unique GlowWorm adventures out of Charleston on the West Coast. Drop us a line :)

And yes, have been quite absent of late! Still lurking every now and then but spare time is a distant memory lol

May have been covered before, but out of curiosity, are people here reasonably tech savvy?

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I would say many people are, but not exclusively. There are plenty of non-technical people around, but I'd say we have a much higher proportion of tech savviness.

If you're interested, we did a census survey last year to learn about our users.

Over half of us work in IT. But many people don't!

I'm actually working on a new one at the moment for this year, the survey should be posted in the not too distant future. I've been working with lemmy.ca who were the inspiration for our one last year, to refine a set of questions.

Oh cool. Thanks for this!
