Uh, does anyone have any obscure Japanese or English text based games ... For my friend

Rogue isn't really obscure considering its the basis of an entire genre of modern games, but it's also the basis of an entire genre of modern games. Dwarf Fortress also has an adventure mode now.

There are countless amazing Japanese visual novels, but they technically have graphics. The most obscure I've played would be Planetarian

Not sure, but you might be able to find something in the abandonware sites.

The last MUD I played was Iconoclast! I think it's still active too. I haven't played this since the mid-2000s or so. I wonder if any of my writing is still in there... Not that I remember what I wrote. I think just a few room and item descriptions.

What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.
