I'm currently outside the US, and I have an uncle in the US who is elderly, broke, not very tech savvy, and he doesn't have cable, Internet or a cell phone.

There's a TV show I know he really wants to watch but he can't, so I was thinking about putting it on a USB and sending it to him. I was also going to maybe put some new movies and TV shows on there, and maybe some 8 and 16 bit rom sets.

Does anyone know if US customs usually checks USB drives coming into the country? What about external hard/SSD drives?

Ohhh, they definitely have the right to do so. Then it's down to probability.

You wanna risk it? I wouldn't but I have to keep my nose clean for clearance. ;-)
