How would I add a new ranking algorithm to Lemmy as a contributor? I'm a developer by trade, but unfamiliar with Rust and the codebase of Lemmy specifically. It doesn't seem like Lemmy has a concept of 'ranking plugins', so whatever I do would have to involve an MR.

Specifically, I'd like to introduce a ranking system that approximates Proportional Approval Voting, specifically using Thiele's elimination methods, like is used in LiquidFeedback.

I'm pretty sure that with a few tweaks to Thiele's rules, I can compute a complete ranking of all comments in a thread in O(ClogC + E + VlogC), where C is the number of comments, E is the total number of likes, and V is the number of users. This would also support partial approvals, upvotes could decay with age.

I believe this would mitigate the tendency towards echo chambers that Lemmy inherits from Reddit. Lemmy effectively uses Block Approval Voting with decays to rank comments and posts, leading to the same people dominating every conversation.

I just noticed that my pictrs image volume reached 20 GBs in size. Does Lemmy or pictrs not delete the cached images automatically after some time?

Doesn't affect usability, but I am curious if other people see the timestamps (i.e. '6 hours ago') next to posts and comments in another language before the page fully loads in.

In my case, the timestamps show up in Chinese (or Japanese Kanji?) and are replaced with English once the page fully loads. Am using Librewolf, have CJK fonts installed, and system is set to English, if that is relevant.

I get the first three and the last two but the others. When I switch them, they don't really seem to do anything except for the Show Avatars option which toggles the avatars. These settings also doesn't seem to exist in other frontends (like Blorp).

I just checked whatever sounded/looked good.

Hi, I would like to look for an instance primarily based on which other instances it doesn't federate with/block or whatever the term is. But clicking on the URL of a few instances, I can't find this information anywhere.

Thanks for any and all help.

I know I've seen it before, some website that translated a link to a post into a link to that same post, but on the instance of the user clicking the link. I cannot for the life of me seem to find it again, though.

It was not a browser extension.

Good day dear Lemmy community!
When I try to use lemmy's private messages, I get the following warning:

Warning: Private messages in Lemmy are not secure. Please create an account on Element.io for secure messaging.

It is very good to have this warning! However, can it be improved?
When I first encountered this wording, I was completely unsure whether the DMs would be totally public due to lemmy's limitations or its open stance, or whether the messages would have a similar security to e.g. email where your trust relies on TLS and the servers involved.

My proposal would be to change the wording to something like:

Warning: Private messages in Lemmy are not End-to-End encrypted. Please create an account on Element.io for secure messaging.

Or if the team is open to it,

Warning: Private messages in Lemmy are not End-to-End encrypted. Please use a platform with E2E encryption for private messaging.

Or if the team is even more open to it,

Warning: Private messages in Lemmy are not End-to-End encrypted. Please use a platform with E2E encryption for private messaging. Lemmy recommends Element.io and XMPP.

Thoughts? I'm ready to create a PR.

why #mastodon & other #fediverse instances won't provide #OpenID to use across web and to be able to login in to multiple web apps (including but not limited to fediverse)

I've been browsing communities just to see what's there and it seemed weird to only be able to sort them algorithmically.

When I feature post on [email protected], it is only featured on my home instance sh.itjust.works. Post also automatically unfeatures itself after some time.

Hello, I'd like to try moving my Lemmy instance to another server.

I've read this: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/backup_and_restore.html and it seems relatively straightforward. So I was wondering if anyone has done it and if there's any particular advice to keep in mind.

The images, which are the "heaviest" part, I have in S3 so I don't have to move them, and therefore the backup/restore should be less complex and shorter, I think.

Are video files cached or federated in any way?

I want to make posts that include video, and those videos I wish to upload on my own webserver to not rely on external links or expiration dates.

But I fear for bandwith, and I want to know if the videos will be cached on the instance or if every user will be a full web request of the video (that I can of course mitigate via good compression, and/or having a dedicated CDN that won't empty my pockets).

Having #fediverse questions.
#askfedi #fedihelp

I follow @gonzalo #pixelfed
&
@lemmy_support #lemmy

but I don't see their posts on my #mastodon UI instance. Why & how to fix, debug?

------------------------------------------------------------

how can I publish a new lemmy thread from my mastodon, should I tag
@lemmy_support or
[email protected]
[email protected]
@LemmyDev
will this trigger automatic re-toot from https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy/_support bot account ?

-------------------------------------------------------------

When you follow 100 accounts & 100 tags, how do you filter meaningful incoming posts in feed ? is there query language to prioritize, or some alternative mastodon client that does that.

------------------------------------------------------------

How does lemmy reputation point distributed across multiple instances, eliminating sybil, fake news , etc ?

Here's the link to the original instance : https://blog.kaki87.net/c/kaki_blog?dataType=Post&sort=New

Here's an example comment from another instance : https://0d.gs/comment/5903730

Here's the same comment on yet another instance : https://jlai.lu/post/21115531/15881483

But from the original instance, the comment doesn't show up.

What to do ?

Thanks

Hi, I have lemmy.world blocked for browsing purposes because you know, it's mostly trash.

However, I want to post a question in [email protected] because I'm having an issue with the app where I can't seem to access the toggle to hide posts from bot accounts.

Is there a way to whitelist a niche community without unblocking the instance it's on?

I've clicked on everything and I can't find a setting for it. It's infuriating! I'm using the Connect app, btw.

Edit: I've changed to Summit and the settings are much more straightforward.

Next to every post in the feed, there's a preview image between the voting buttons and the post title.

Is there a way to hide that preview image?

steps to reproduce:

  1. create a community
  2. change its name
  3. load own user profile

expected results:

  • community's new name is displayed both in the "Moderates" and "Subscribed" boxes

actual results:

  • new community name is displayed in the "Moderates" box
  • community's old name is still displayed in the "Subscribed" box

additional notes:

  • the renamed community's new name becomes visible after subscribing to some other community
  • sorry for posting this here, but, i don't want to give microsoft my telephone/ID/firstborn/etc which is required to open an issue on github these days

How can one configure their Lemmy instance to reject illegal content? And I mean the bad stuff, not just the NSFW stuff. There are some online services that will check images for you, but I'm unsure how they can integrate into Lemmy.

As Lemmy gets more popular, I'm worried nefarious users will post illegal content that I am liable for.

Hello, I came here searching for a post I made in a community, I think the community was "Rollerblading, and my post was a review. However, when I go to my profile there is nothing under "posts". I also checked for other posts that were in the monster hunter world community, but I can't find anything, and it seems like the communities no longer exist. I don't care about other posts, I would just want the inline skates review. Is there a way to retrieve this post?
When I go to my profile, it still says "6 posts", but now under "posts" there is only this one.

I just created a community but left it without a wallpaper (or whatever it's called here). A little later I found out what the wallpaper should be and now I wanna add one but I can't see any buttons about editing the community. So: how can I add a wallpaper image to an already existing community?
