Pretty striking pictures, how close were you to the wasp itself?

Probably around 2-3". They were surprisingly docile.

I'm convinced that most critters can tell the difference between peaceful and hostile humans and act accordingly. I'm constantly surrounded by bees and wasps in my yard and haven't been stung or bitten once.

That must be. We have a giant Japanese knotweed that's blooming RN and all the pollinators are swarming it like crazy. Tons of different wasps, bees, hoverflies, moths, you name it. None of them cared that I was all up in their business.

They don't like that they are made out of paper at all... damn click bait, lol. Nice pictures.
