There are a few Canada specific Social Media platforms coming up as well. EH Social and Monnett.Social are topping the list.

Consider adding mastodon

Bluesky doesn’t feel as open

The standard guide does, but I removed it in place of EH Social.... that said, I could have removed Bluesky instead

dunno if i'd be recommending Shift. they're not exactly 100% free and you can essentially get the exact same experience using like Zen or Floorp which are free. Also Shift has zero support for Linux. Also as someone who has used it, it's honestly not a great experience.

Shift feels like a weird recommendation. Nearly all browsers these days are a fork of firefox or chromium. Their website seems notably unforthcoming about what their browser even is. There are plenty of open source forks of firefox and chrome that strip out the vendor spyware, that are also known and reputable. Those would all be a better choice.

Shift doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, nor is it on their list of web browsers. And that list has some really weird ones like iCab, Lynx, and qutebrowser.

You guys aren't wrong, but they are a legitimate company and being the ONLY truly Canadian option I felt they had to be mentioned.

P.s. from my research they are built on top of Chrome.

Flickr seems like a weird alternative for hosted photos. That is more for like photographers, not personal pictures.

Anyway, Jottacloud is another option

Here are many other options for email, not saying for this guide, but if you ever wanted to update your site

Thanks, I actually did put Jottacloud on the latest standard guide (instead of Internxt) - forgot to carry it through here. In my mind they are one of the better options so is worth highlighting.

Good catch on Flickr. I've removed them from the site for that very reason. I'll update the guides to reflect the same - thanks!

Nextcloud also sorts photos for you.

No mastodon, no keepass. Needs improvement

Tuta for Email is great.

Also consider adding Reddit -> PieFed under social media

Deezer is more Russian and Saudi than European

[-] FallenWalnut@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah... it is mentioned on their profile. Sadly have to simplify things on these one-page guides. https://purchasewithpurpose.io/software/7tq19sdu4QDL5ZXBsAjMfK/

My usual recommended option is Qobuz. Least controversial of them all.

Nextcloud is mentioned under photos and is on the website https://purchasewithpurpose.io/category/file-storage/

There are just so many excellent options for Storage that it was hard to include them all...

I'm glad my de-googling journey has brought me here. This guide is fantastic, and it's a very shareable format! I want to try out these Google Photos altermatives.

@ek-hou-van-braai@piefed.social I see your excellent idea of moving from Reddit to PieFed, and I raise you moving from Twitter to Sharkey.

Also, I wouldn't recommend Firefox anymore, so I'd put LibreWolf ahead of it.

Thanks! A lot of time has been point into these guides. Btw, if you didn't see there is also a website that goes into far more detail. https://ca.purchasewithpurpose.io/

WordPerfect is Canadian?!?!

I'm so old I used the DOS version for multiple jobs, back when it was from Provo, Utah (US).

[-] FallenWalnut@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

It really is a stretch including that as an alternative, but apparently people are still buying it 😅
