So I had a clip I wanted to upload to a lemmy comment:

  • Tried it as an (avc) mp4... Failed.
  • OK, too big? I shrink it to 2MB, then 1MB. Failed.
  • VP9 Webm maybe? 2MB, 1MB, failed. AV1? Failed.
  • OK, fine, no video. Lets try an animated AVIF. Failed. It seems lemmy doesn't even take static AVIF images
  • WebP animation then... Failed. Animated PNG, failed.

End result, I have to burden the server with a massive, crappy looking GIF after trying a dozen formats. With all due respect, this is worse than some aging service like Reddit that doesn't support new media formats.

For reference, I'm using the web interface. Is this just a format restriction of lemmy.world, or an underlying software support issue?

Are you trying to upload?

Have you considered using markdown?

Like this?

Test:

test video

EDIT: Seems to work! Didn't realize I could embed videos like that, there's no shortcut in the browser UI.

I’m on Mlem (Mobile) through lemmy.world and you post looks like this:

Everyone else’s in this thread looks fine though.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Probably because it’s AV1.

I just noticed it doesn’t work on my IPhone (16) not even through the link: https://files.catbox.moe/foodzx.webm

But the VP9 one does. That's… Disappointing.

I figured. Works for me on desktop linux too.

AV1 support is just one more of those things Apple has been dense about.

Doesn't work for me:

No video with supported formate and MIME type found.

code "validate-file-size"

msg "Resonse body larger than size limit"

*on sopuli.xyz

It works on my lemmy.ca account tho, but only after I enable java scripts for the video embeds.

You mean you can't see the embed in the above comment? What client?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Certain client work and some don't. Jeroba does not work but Firefox does.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I'm on firefox lol, but through Ubuntu snap... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Firefox browser 137.0.2 (64-bit) (snap), Ubuntu 24.10.

Upload it to catbox.moe instead and then hotlink it to here

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yeah, I guess a link is fine, but can I embed them somehow?

EDIT: Embedding seems to work.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You generally can embed them the same way as you would a gif with the ![](url) format

That's how I just embedded this mp4. ![](https://files.catbox.moe/ppcrz0.mp4) Works fine on desktop/web, is a bit broken for phone apps, depending on the app.

Still, maybe Lemmy.world (and other instances?) should allow uploading of videos that are about the size of images. Maybe a limit of 768KB?

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You should probably talk to the devs, as I'm pretty sure this is just how Lemmy works. It's not very format-friendly, on any instance. But then I think they want to center text as more important than images/video.

Also, storage space is expensive, so I think they're trying to minimize impact to admins who have a bunch of throwaway media uploaded to their servers to be viewed once and then never again.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Github issue then? M, okay.

That's a great thing about Lemmy I suppose, there's somewhere to go to discuss features that isn't a black hole, lol.

For reference, here's an example

A quick VP9 webm video, 1920x1080, 2.8MB: https://files.catbox.moe/l5yvor.webm

A smaller webm, 1920x1080, 1.1 MB and still looks fine: https://files.catbox.moe/foodzx.webm

The GIF. 400x225, 12FPS, 5.6MB, optimized as best I can yet looks like a can of spam. But it's what Lemmy would take:

Yeah, Book 3 of The Legend of Korra. That whole season is solid gold.

A longer clip with sound: https://files.catbox.moe/8z5ggp.webm

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I had no problems uploading animated webp so this is propably Lemmy.world limitation

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Interesting. That's what I was afraid of.

I guess I need to make a Lemmy.world support thread for that?

I've only seen the .gif file format functions when embedded on Lemmy, but I also only really use an app to browse. And uploading one can be a PITA because there is a file size limit on most instances that is pretty small. Linking to them off-site and then just adding an exclamation point (!) at the front of the link will embed it. Like so:
