Here's my situation: I'm somewhat advanced in my career. I've been working in media for over a decade. I'm currently unemployed and looking for more work, but I haven't been finding a lot of success. And the truth is that most of the media jobs available to me are deeply uninspiring: the kinds of producing/shooting/editing roles that I've done for a long time, and that no longer bring me joy.

But there's one thing that HAS gotten me excited over the last few years: Learning more about self-hosting and FOSS. Since ~2021 I've been on a journey, building my own computers, setting up my own home server, changing my workflow over to FOSS apps, and slowly moving more of my devices to Linux. I love the idea of using my skills to break up the power of tech giants and their consumer lock-in. This is political for me, and I love it.

Is there any way that I could transition my career to something along those lines? I'm not experienced or knowledgeable enough to be a systems admin. But is there some role I could perform that would let me pursue this passion, learn more about it, and get paid?

Hi, I am trying to access an NYT article from 2013 but for some reason it's unavailable on archive snapshot pages.

Are there any reliable alternatives I can check out or if anyone knows a different way to access this article could you please let me know: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/02/health/experts-scramble-to-trace-the-emergence-of-mers.html

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I recently wrote a mobile-friendly GNU/Linux app called Weights and Measures. It takes a number, and converts it into different units of measurement. I know, it's not the most advanced thing in the world, but I believe it's handy enough that more people than myself could use such an app. Personally, I use it to convert my weight from lbs to kilograms.

The thing is, I know that I should publish it, but I feel very demotivated from doing so. Publishing requires effort, so it typically requires a specific motivator. For myself, I used to have much a much stronger stance when it came to free/libre software.

Lately however, I feel very disconnected from any sense of community. I don't really feel like we are much of a community in the first place. I don't know a single person in my real life who cares about libre software outside of myself, and online, I feel somewhat jaded, as those who care about libre software seem to be more about worshipping the fungus of Richard Stallman's feet than they are about the actual libre culture movement.

As such, I can't decide whether I should keep working on it, or just keep it to myself.

TL;DR: Lonely software developer feels jaded from the libre software community and probably needs to find a way to connect with like-minded folks online.

Is there a way to release a work under a copyleft license without preventing other people from sharing a copy of it on YouTube (only allows selecting standard YouTube license or permissive Creative Commons license) and similar platforms?

More reason to also use Alovoa

As far as I know, open file formats have become the standard for basically all industries and types of files. However, some of them, like the Microsoft Office Formats, are still proprietary. I have seen Open Office documents and Ogg being recommended for Office documents and audio files, respectively, but I'm somewhat confused about other types of formats like video.

Hello,

I started using gemini almost a year ago when I had recently learned about it. after some time using it I got busy with my life and forget that this awersome protocol exists.

today I was hanging out in IRC and found #gemini . It made me check it out after this much time and it surprised me that gemini is still active. however when I searched for stuff using gemini search engine I found a ton of dead links on the first page. it was disappointing. bbs.geminispace.org is still alive and the last post was 7hours ago. there is also a youtuber name zaney who attempted to port entire gentoo wiki to gemtext, but it seems like he lost interest in doing so.

what are some cool gemini capsule which are still active and you use it?

What is libre culture?

Libre culture is all about empowering people. While the general philosophy stems greatly from the free software movement, libre culture is much broader and encompasses other aspects of culture such as music, movies, food, technology, etc.

Some beliefs include but aren't limited to:

Rules

I've looked into the ways other forums handle rules, and I've distilled their policies down into two simple ideas.

Libre culture is a very very broad topic, and while it's perfectly okay for a conversation to stray, I do ask that we keep things generally on topic.
