Important Note!

Roku is forcing us to update our minimum device firmware targets by October 1, 2026. Currently we support old Roku OS versions going back into Roku OS 12, but they are forcing us to change the minimum to Roku OS 15.1.

Releases will be blocked if we do not make this change.

Y'all on older devices that are no longer updated or y'all who block automatic Roku updates have 3 options that I can see.

  1. Buy a new device
  2. Stop receiving Jellyfin for Roku updates after October 1, 2026
  3. Sideload the Jellyfin app, knowing some things may stop working as we make required changes to support OS 15.1

We'll communicate with y'all as we start work on supporting this, but know IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF US! We're being forced to do this, so if you're affected, contact Roku.

Don't yell at us. 😐

Please share to spread the news so peeps have as much time as possible to make decisions.

We are pleased to announce the latest stable release of Jellyfin, version 10.11.8! This minor release brings several bugfixes to improve your Jellyfin experience. As always, please ensure you take a full backup before upgrading!

Note: This release fixes several regressions from 10.11.7, with the goal to get people onto an updated release due to the forthcoming (t-minus 9 days) release of the GHSAs/CVEs that were fixed in 10.11.7. Please upgrade to this release as soon as you can.

You can find the full changelogs on the GitHub releases for the server repository and the web repository.

Release prepared with <3 by @joshuaboniface, the rest of the Jellyfin team, and contributors like you.

Happy watching!

I've run up a copy of Jellyfin in docker on a cheap NAS about a month ago. Seem to have mostly sorted out the wrinkles. First time running docker or jellyfin (all my other selfhosting has been on bare metal not using docker).

ONE issue: Timezone (daylight saving).

The NAS host OS is correctly showing the local TZ with 1 hour shift post daylight saving at the end of March - I checked at a command prompt (it's a tweaked version of debian) that it's showing correctly.

The Docker container however is showing the base time before daylight saving (ie UTC vs UTC+1)

I've just worked through how to change the docker compose file to pick up the correct TZ ie putting a

TZ: "Europe/London"

In the compose file (Project, settings, compose configuration)

BUT

When I go to apply it (redeploy button), it gives me a warning that makes me nervous to push it out.

"Redeployment will delete unneeded containers and images"

Soooo...will hitting deploy wipe out all the configuration I've done and the days worth of indexing all the media the server has done ? Or am I being overly nervous ?

Hey everyone! I've spent the last several months building "Dorsal", an iOS-native music player for Jellyfin with the features that I felt I personally wanted. Designed for those who like to see and listen to their music as an album-focused experience.

I'm interested in getting it in your hands to see what you all think. I have my Jellyfin server set up in a pretty basic way so I'm curious to see if it works well for others too! The code is open-source (MIT-licensed), I have a TestFlight open beta, and it is available on the App Store (it does have a price to support development, developer program fees, etc), so you can get it for free or use and support the production release, up to you! Here are the links:

I'm the solo dev, so I'm happy to try and answer any questions! Thanks everyone!

I am not a very heavy user of Jellyfin, there are weeks when I not add any new movie or series to my server.

However recently, and I mean the past 2-3 months for that, it feels like Jellyfin is getting worse at correctly recognizing media, especially movies as such.

Not sure I can give much examples here, as I also didn't write down which movies caused issues. But I make sure the files are named as outlined in the documentation, with "title (year).extension", I have not added any media IDs to filenames yet because well, it used to work really nicely.

The mismatched movies don't really follow any pattern, they usually do not even include parts of the original title or year defined in the filename.

One thing I changed recently, but I am sure the issues started well before that, is that I have movies in an additional subfolder to sort for the starting letter, in order to unclutter my folders. E.g. before it went into /movies, now it would go into /movies/a if the name starts with a. I could try next time moving the file to the main folder and test if that works better, but I doubt it.

Any suggestions or is it just getting worse? When I use the identify option I can always find the correct movie, and with the frequency I add movies it is really just a small annoyance, but still...

While looking for some alternatives to Swiftfin and Infuse, I've found these:

Reefy - mentioned here / GitHub
Fork of Swiftfin as the author was fed up with the lack of updates.
$8.99 one-time IAP

JellyTV - Homepage
£1.99/month, £29.99/year (looks like there's a discounted option at £14.99/year), or £39.99 for life.

The maths is not quite mathing here as the for-life IAP is £39.99, the familiy upgrade is another £39.99 which makes £79.98 total

but the "family-for-life" option is £89.99 for some reason. (Makes you wonder whether this was vibe-coded.)

Neptune - Homepage
Currently in beta and you need to ask on their Discord for the Testflight link.

Has anyone tried any of these?

Hi!

Small disclaimer/warning about the video: Attached video snipped contains the problem (when he bends down), 10 seconds Battlestar Galactica and a bloody face. Sorry, it's really annoying to capture.

Maybe someone can help me figure out what causes my problem.

Problem:

  • I experience flickering every few minutes.
  • I have this on different devices (Mac OS, iPad, Linux) with different browsers (Jellyfin app, Firefox, Safari).
  • I don't transcode in my example, but it's also happening when transcoding.
  • It is not happening if I download the file and play it locally.
  • It happens with all kind of different videos.

I'm not sure what I actually could change to be honest. Could this some kind of Jellyfin bug? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Docker vs ... not? (thelemmy.club)
submitted 2 weeks ago by nile_istic@lemmy.world to c/jellyfin@lemmy.ml

I'm pretty new to self-hosting in general, so I'm sorry if I'm not using correct terminology or if this is a dumb question.

I did a big archival project last year, and ripped all 700 or so DVDs/Blu-rays I own. Ngl, I had originally planned on just having them all in a big media folder and picking out whatever I wanted to watch that way. Fortunately, I discovered Jellyfin, and went with that instead.

So I bought a mini pc to run Ubuntu server on, and I just installed Jellyfin directly there. Eventually I decided to try hosting a few other services (like Home Assistant and BookLore (R.I.P.)), which I did through Docker.

So I'm wondering, should I be running Jellyfin through Docker as well? Are there advantages to running Jellyfin through Docker as opposed to installed directly on the server? Would transitioning my Jellyfin instance to Docker be a complicated process (bearing in mind that I'm new and dumb)?

Thanks for any assistance.

1st Problem, Jellyfin crashing:
After installing jellyfin, I got "(jellyfin)[7589]: jellyfin.service: Referenced but unset environment variable evaluates to an empty string: JELLYFIN_ADDITIONAL_OPTS, JELLYFIN_FFM>" on my Fedora 43 desktop.
After searching I found this, which was edit IsStartupWizardCompleted to false, and it worked, I went ahead with the wizard setup.

2nd Problem, New devices connecting via webui are shown the setup wizard instead of login page:
On my Desktop and TV works fine, but when I try to connect from my laptop, the setup wizard comes up, whether is the web version or the media player version.
With one more search, I found a user with the same problem, and the solution is to change IsStartupWizardCompleted to true, but it does crush jellyfin.

SOLUTION WAS FOUND and was easier than you think
I did clear cookies on my desktop for web jellyfin, server installation came up, went through it again, and now it works fine! I did login without problems on my laptop.
Will monitor and see how it goes.

It make no sense today for me anymore...I found more downside than real use of my RAID5 array.

My setup: 5 disks of 22TB in Raid 5

  • Data Organising is estimated to 20 days!
  • Rebuild time of RAID5 is unknown never had to do (yet) :-)
  • Disks never sleep in BTFRS, power cost is here 0.30 per kWh
  • Constant noise of 5 disk clicking instead of only one or two when using
  • Do I need 80TB of continuous stiorage? Not really with 2700 movies= 12TB, 8000 TVShow episode= 14TB, most is still in h264 few in h265 and really really few in AV1 (fantastic by the way)
  • I dont care about Media, and rebuild everything on a 10GB Fiber most of it automatically. Most of my private stuff is on 3-2-1 encrypted anyway
  • High availability is not a topic, I’m alone using this box. And even, my Homelab is best effort not 24/7

I have another NAS full SSD, with 8 SSD but I hate the nature of RAID in SSD: they die unexpected most of the time. I prefer to lose 4TB then put 30TB at risks if 2 or more SSD decide to stop working

So maybe duplicating on another disk in a mirror (rsync) is maybe better for me

so, was installing the usual jellyfin-media-player flatpak on a new install as I did so many times, mistyped and was presented with a list of jellyfin related apps. there's a new Jellyfin Desktop app in there that def wasn't there before, has the official sounding org.jellyfin.JellyfinDesktop id.

installed it, looks the same. haven't caught that in the news feeds I follow, so what's the story there, what's different from the iwalton3 thingy?

$ flatpak install jellyfin

edit: so far, works as drop-in replacement, functionality is the same and command line switches work (e.g. I have a shorcut that launches it in TV mode on a 4K screen with --fullscreen --tv --scale-factor 2). the UI is noticeably faster and it plays some HEVC files that were glitching out on same hardware.

I watch Anime and i’d like to know if it’s possible to update the series cover to the latest season’s cover/poster image automatically Also, how is the “correct way” to handle split-cour seasons that usually have new cover art and opening songs etc? Do i just merge them both into a season or is there way to separate seasons more granually into “season 3 part 1” and “season 3 part 2” on jellyfin?

While scrolling through the credits of a documentary on my server, I was gobsmacked to learn that David Cameron, former PM of the UK, had played a small role in Mad Max. Fuck, he pulled of that mechanic's Aussie accent with no trouble, and at only age 13!

Obviously this actor just has the same name, but I can't find a way to tell jellyfin that this is someone else. It feels bad that I can either choose for this actor's biography to be overshadowed by the PM, or to cast him as himself in a documentary about a bunch of terrible people. Does anyone know of a solution?

Background: Jellyfin app on a Roku Ultra, all codecs and episode lengths are affected

Not a significant issue by any means but it happens every time and I don't know why.

Sunday night I watched Episode 9 of a show then went to bed. Last night, I scrolled to Next Up and selected episode 10. Jellyfin then asked me if I wanted to start at the beginning or resume from 12:42. I THINK the time it gives us 50% through a show (I've gotten used to ignoring it)

I have no other players to test but I did confirm it happens on all file types and run times. I did NOT test if it's accurate when I do stop an episode half way, through.

Is this a Roku-exclusive problem? Is there a solution either way?

I stumbled upon an old Android Tablet today running Android 6. Even though it is quite old, it has a 1440p screen, decent speakers and the battery still lasts a few hours.

I already tried Jellyfin in the preinstalled Chrome and the official Jellyfin App. The Jellyfin UI worked, but when I went to play an episode it would just show the show background and not respond anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas or know of some obscure client which supports older Android versions? It seems like a waste to get rid of the tablet, when all the main components are still perfect for watching media.

Edit:
I had completely forgotten the obvious solution: Kodi!
Kodi with the JellyCon addon works great. The only important thing I had to change, was enabling force transcoding of h265 and av1 video in the JellyCon settings.
