The attached video inspired me to make this post.

  1. What was your first series or movie?

  2. What were your first impressions?

  3. Best series or movie? Why?

  4. Worst experience with anime? Why?

I heard one of my siblings watching something in a language I didn't understand. It turned out to me Love Hina. It made me fall in love with the language and culture. My interest in the medium itself, I discovered later, perhaps with Pokémon and Dragon Ball. I don't remember my initial impressions, but it was warm and fun, I do remember. The immense sexualization of females was definitely encouraging to my adolescent cisman self, to the detriment of the female demographic, of course. Rose of Versailles is probably one of my favorite anime. Other than being an amazing story - considering that it was written by a TWENTY year young girl - the way that it conveys emotions visually and through the soundtrack is, to me, unparalleled. I don't really have any bad experience with anime. I guess I was shocked when

i was a little disappointed to see there aren't many spinoffs or anything. i'm hungry for in-universe content but also generally for similar media. i love the noir and dystopian vibes, and just the way the plot progresses. does anyone have recommendations for similar anime?

EDIT: It was Madö King Granzört! Thanks to everybody that upvoted and contributed making the post active.

Hi! I've been trying to find this old anime that I used to watch as a kid. It was probably in the early 90s, but in could be from the late 80s.

What I vaguely remember is that, in this anime, the kids would enter what appeared to be some sort of dark room or dark space, and there they would be standing on top of a pentacle (like in the attached picture) and the moves they would do there would be forwarded to some monster or robot, so they would fight other monsters or robots.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "mecha anime". I don't remember enough to be sure, so perhaps it didn't fit the category after all.

Any hint would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This is about as hype as anime can get. KMFDM's "Ultra" just took it to 11. Classic sakuga. Classic woke...

My only thought reading the headline was “why are scientists researching this?” So, of course, the clickbait title got me to read the article.

No frogs, sorry kitty-birthday-sad

In storytelling, even small visual details can become unforgettable. In the globally popular anime "Demon Slayer," one such detail is the short bamboo muzzle worn by a central character. It looks simple and believable, just a piece of green bamboo tied across the mouth. But a new study suggests that this familiar object could not exist in nature as shown in the anime.

To investigate this, Professor Akio Inoue from the Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology and Innovation Research Institute, Kindai University, Japan, compared anime illustrations showing the bamboo muzzle with the structure of real bamboo. The findings were published in the journal Advances in Bamboo Science.

"I immediately noticed the awkward spacing between the nodes since I have been conducting research on bamboo for nearly 20 years. This intrigued me to conduct natural science analysis of anime bamboo and actual bamboo," says Prof. Inoue.

Bamboo culms are not smooth tubes. They are divided by solid joints called nodes and hollow sections known as internodes. In real bamboo, these sections follow a predictable pattern: the longest ones usually occur near the middle of the culm, while those toward the base and tip are shorter.

Researcher compares the relative lengths of bamboo segments in the anime muzzle with those in real bamboo from two common species. The anime depiction shows much shorter neighboring segments compared with the central one, a pattern not observed in natural bamboo. Credit: Prof. Akio Inoue from Kindai University, Japan.

This arrangement helps the plant balance strength and flexibility, allowing it to bend without breaking. The anime version appears quite different. The central section looks unusually long, while the neighboring sections seem much shorter than would normally occur.

To test this impression, researchers analyzed 150 anime illustrations in which the muzzle was clearly visible and measured the lengths of its central and adjacent sections. These proportions were then compared with measurements from 112 bamboo samples from two common species in Japan (Phyllostachys spp.). The difference was striking.

In the anime illustrations, the sections next to the longest one were less than half its length. In real bamboo, adjacent sections are typically almost as long as the longest segment. Statistical analyses confirmed that the illustrated pattern falls far outside the range observed in nature.

The study investigated if the muzzle represented a different bamboo species. Historical records showed that only a few species were common in early 20th-century Japan, and their structural patterns were generally similar. None would explain the extreme proportions seen in the anime. Another clue came from the scale.

When compared with average human facial measurements, the muzzle appeared shorter than a real bamboo piece of similar thickness, further suggesting that the design does not reflect the actual plant anatomy.

"This research does not aim to criticize the manga work. Rather, it seeks to contribute to raising public awareness of bamboo and improving scientific literacy," says Prof. Inoue.

Because the analysis relies on simple measurements and basic mathematics, it could also be adapted for classroom activities. Students could study real bamboo culms, observe how their structure changes along the length, and compare those patterns with fictional depictions.

"Our study may raise awareness of bamboo among many people, sparking interest in the relationship between humans and bamboo," says Prof. Inoue.

At its core, the study shows how scientific curiosity often begins with a simple observation, noticing that something does not quite look right. By studying a familiar detail from a popular series, the research turns entertainment into an opportunity to explore plant biology and the mechanics of natural design.

I already own an international blu ray player (BPX370) for Blu-rays I occasionally import from Europe. Would there be any reason to import anything from Japan?

I suspect the answer is no, unless there are some Japanese exclusives. I'd prefer to at least have English subtitles.

Anime Tosho Shutdown (animetosho.org)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by themachinestops@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/anime@lemmy.ml

From animetosho owner:

After managing this project for roughly 15 years, I've decided that I want to move on to other things. This was not an easy decision to make and is something I've been considering over the past few years yet reluctant to do. The amount of time and effort I have poured into AT is basically a significant portion of my life now, so throwing it away is still an uncomfortable thought (especially considering the contributions others have made here). Nevertheless, it's something I always knew I had to do at some point.

Anime Tosho has been a lot more successful than I had originally imagined, and I'm proud of what it has achieved. I see that it delivers value to a sizable audience (myself included) and some downstream projects rely on it. Unfortunately I can't shut down this website without it affecting anyone else, so my apologies for disruptions my selfish decision will cause.

I don't intend to leave AT in a semi-unmaintained state (unlike cough Nyaa.si), despite the upkeep being relatively low. I also don't intend to hand over control of AT to someone else - I encourage anyone who wishes to manage a service like this to do so under their own name and terms. Thus I believe a shutdown to be the best course of action.

However, with the changes, Crunchyroll is actually adding a perk to the Fan Tier, its most affordable option. With the Fan Tier, you’ll now able to download content to watch offline on one device, a perk that was previously available starting with the Mega Fan tier.
