Hi, Between versions 319 and 343, the app has seen significant improvements in cross-platform federation support (aka PieFed), a more robust alert system, and enhanced link previews.

You can now watch for new content on Communities, Posts, and Persons. When there is a new Post or Comment you will get a notification.

On Piefed instances it will use the native API to get alerts, and on Lemmy instances we poll for updates in the background at the interval you set.

๐ŸŒŸ Big New Additions (319 to 343):

Community Alerts & Watching (v334): A major new feature under Settings > Alerts that allows you to "watch" specific communities, posts, or users to receive notifications. Enhanced Federation Support (PieFed/Mbin): PieFed: Added support for Community Topics, improved parent ID resolution, and better voting/profile handling. Mbin & Fediverse: Added specialized link preview tags for Mbin, Mastodon, and Bluesky to better identify content sources. Major Link Preview Overhaul (v324-v325): Link preview cards are now integrated directly into posts and comments. They now resolve internal links (Settings, Multicommunities) and display titles/icons for Lemmy/PieFed users and communities. List Banners (v341): Added new visual banners for the Inbox and Saved pages to improve navigation and consistent look and feel. Sticky Sorting (v320): You can now set and persist specific sort orders on a per-community basis. Sign-In Redesign (v333): The entire Sign-In screen was updated with a fresh, modern design.

Cheers!

Hi,

If you've been on beta you've probably already seen some of this as I worked out bugs and other issues. But in general the top line is there's been some major re-architecture of the app which should let it feel even snappier and more performant than before. I've also added Image Gallery support, so now any post with multiple images in the body will auto-collapse into one image gallery. This is configurable in the settings if you prefer to see all of the images as well. I've also taken Horizontal swiping on posts out of 'Experimental' and it should handle pagination and backing-out more gracefully.

Galleries and video playback now work better and load in the right resolutions, images and thumbnails behave consistently, and animations feel smoother. I also made caching and performance improvements which should reduce stutters and stale content.

If you have any feature requests please let me know :)

TL;DR Changes (versions 287โ€“301)

  • Media & galleries: added image galleries and video support in galleries; fixed uploaded images not showing, full-resolution image loading, tall-thumbnail aspect-ratio preservation, alt-text display, and various image preload/load timeouts and error-handling improvements.
  • Playback & UI: added video autoplay countdown animation, removed small image animation delays, improved community search relevance, adjusted image animation timing, and smoothed swipe-to-close behavior.
  • Caching & performance: fixed multiple comment/post caching issues (including edits showing cached content), introduced a setting to control max cache size, improved comment rendering performance, reduced memory leaks, and generally improved scroll feel and pagination.
  • Offline, federation & reliability: added offline fallback for community pages, federation detection for comments, enhanced error messages, fixed gray-screen and other stability issues, and reverted/adjusted settings storage to improve reliability.
  • Permissions, downloads & validation: improved Android permission handling for downloads, added file validation for downloaded images, and implemented download timeout and retry logic.
  • Misc UI & quality-of-life: added a bug report button, adjusted Export button placement, fixed bottom-sheet and external-link behaviors, made reply text selectable, fixed thumbnails not being clickable, and other small layout/typo fixes.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: New post notifications are repeating posts I've already been notified about, and not showing newer ones. Might be a community caching issue? The community in question when I went to it it wasn't showing a newer post until I manually refreshed.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set a community to notify
  2. Wait
  3. Get notified
  4. Dismiss the notification
  5. It tends to turn back up, maybe when there is another new post?

Scroll down 2-3 screen lengths in any user profile page and then switch sections(Overview, Posts, Comments), the top part with the use banner and section buttons are duplicated.

Hide post functions from the feed overflow menu is broken and tapping on them does nothing.

I've noticed that I'll see feed posts marked with new comments but when I tap on the post, there are no new comments. I'll then have to manually refresh the post for the comments to show. This is typically for posts that I've viewed once already and it seems the caching system could be improved.

Comment count and points total are being added to each post info on feeds when on list view. It's fine on card view.

Bug report function isn't being saving as a draft anymore? I used to be able to use that, add some info, and then resume that draft by using the create post function in the Connect community but now when I do, I just get an empty new post.

Frontpage broken? (thelemmy.club)
submitted 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) by flabbergast@lemmy.world to c/lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca

Did the latest update break my frontpage?
Can see posts when switching to ALL, but my frontpage won't load...

Edit: Default Frontpage still doesn't work, but manually choosing Frontpage does work.

I'm in the UK, due to differences of opinion between Imgur owners and the UK government whenever i access a thread with an embedded imgur picture imgur sends the following picture

if i see this it usually reminds me to turn on my VPN, however connect seems to have cached this image so that even when, after i VPN to another location, i refresh it regurgitates the above instead of the actual picture (below)

I managed to work around this by going to Settings -> Cache Stats -> Scroll to the bottom -> Clear cache and then refreshing the page but clearing the entire cache every time someone comments with a picture while i don't have my VPN on is a little onerous.

I imagine this affects all UK users of the app, along with anyone in any other jurisdiction that Imgur is blocking.

The response headers from imgur are noticeably different for actual pictures, vs the "not available in your region" picture. could this picture be exempted from being cached?

I managed to replicate the issue using PIA streaming optimized servers (other vpns will probably work too)

Steps to Recreate

  • Connect VPN to PIA Server: UK Streaming Optimized
  • Clear image cache in Connect
  • Access the comment at this location: https://feddit.uk/post/43557032/22931555
  • Connect VPN to PIA Server: Australia Streaming Optimized
  • Access comment at same location with Connect again

Expected Behaviour

Blocked image should not have been cached, Non blocked image should be shown

Current Behaviour

Blocked image is cached, and thus shown

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Normally there is a (D) symbol next to whichever feed you set as your default when starting the app. For some reason, this setting seems to have cleared itself and displays an error page instead.

Missing (D) symbol next to a feed

Error screen

I think the app updating removed my default feed preference. Setting a new default feed does appear to persist.

Offline mode? (feddit.nu)
submitted 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) by Joyje@feddit.nu to c/lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca

Hi everyone!

I would love for this app to automatically download the latest posts from my subscribed communities when I have WiFi. Every post I have somehow interacted with (liked, commented on, saved etc.) should always be stored locally and accessible offline, but continuously updated to contain all the latest comments and likes every time I have WiFi, and remain stored locally until manually removed.

Of course my own interactions with the locally stored posts and comments will also have to be saved locally until a WiFi connection is established, at which point they would be uploaded to Lemmy for other users to see.

This would also decrease loading times, making the app feel much faster, since it now only has to fetch new or modified data instead of getting ALL of the data over and over again every time a user opens the app.

Every post that the user haven't interacted with should of course only be stored locally if it isn't older than X amount of weeks. X should be a variable determined by the user. Once such a post is older than X, it should be automatically removed from the local storage to save space.

Can we please make this happen! This is how to truly make this app feel snappy while simultaneously making Lemmy interactions more reliable and even accessible offline. No more waiting for data fetch when the app is first being opened and no more empty feeds if you are offline. It would definitely be a life changer for all Lemmy users.

Shouldn't we have a Piefed Connect community? Or perhaps the intention is for this community to house both for the time being.

My main concern is users that only use Lemmy will have little interest in posts about the Piefed aspect of the app here. Having a dedicated Piefed community will also generate activity and engagement on Piefed to expand the user base.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: It seems filters are not applying now, or possibly just not being respected. It may have to do with capitalization- it seems posts containing filtered words are allowed through if the first letter is capitalized.

  2. Browse All.

A few months ago the app would stutter sometimes with typical use. It was fixed and went away. It's back for me.

Edit I'm using a Samsung galaxy s23. It stutters in any action - scrolling the feed, opening the menu from left, opening the app, posting. Anything at related to window movement. It's not stuttering right now when I'm typing.

I'm.on version 1.0.382. I assume it's the latest because I have auto update on.

~~When checking the version, I saw a pop-up about database? Is this relevant? It said migrating could improve performance.~~

It helped very slightly but the stuttering still happens.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Upvoting comments that are from a crosspost give the following error:

Error: AppError(ErrorType.unknown): An unexpected error occurred: LemmyApiException: couldnt find comment

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Visit https://reddthat.com/post/58720048
  2. Scroll under the Cartoons section
  3. Try to upvote any comment (I haven't tried replying, might be the same issue)

Note: selecting cartoons from the crosspost list and then upvoting is working as expected. Also upvoting a comment on the original post (below comics) whilst on that page is working. Might be a caching issue?

Link preview is rendering the thumbnail for the links in this post but tapping on it gives a page not found error. Perhaps it's because of the URL method used.

If I scroll up in the comments section of my history at a certain speed, it stutters similar to that previous bug that causes stuttering and when you scrolled up on post comments. If you scroll up at a faster speed that it's not an issue but at slower speeds, it appears. Here's a video of when I try to scroll up.

With xmsall font size setting on comments, all comments that have a user vote total will have the points and timestamp get shifted up a bit for some reason. A while back I noticed an something similar happening but it was for comments from posters who had a profile picture that wouldn't load for whatever reason. The issue was no longer reproducible before I reported. Here's a screenshot, of the current issue, for reference.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: The post in question:

https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/53330380

That's the url as connect copied it from my feed view in Connect, but I imagine my experience actually involved the federated copy on Beehaw. [Edit: the tchncs.de link crashes also.] A couple of attempts looked like the app was trying to throw up an error message of some sort, but it crashed back to the launcher so quickly I couldn't read it.
