I should probably check out mastodon too finally since I've made the plunge into lemmy already.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 year ago (3 children)

@DarkTides @db0 i mean, i'm commenting on this thread from mastodon so...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (8 children)

What! Mastodon can access lemmy too?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The Lemmy structure isn't really visible from Mastodon, and communities shows up as groups in Mastodon, but yeah you can see Lemmy's content on the Fediverse, same as on kbin :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you give us a screenshot of how it looks from Mastodon?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is trippy. These posts on a totally different platform...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

@dustojnikhummer ...using the same protocol 😉

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago

It's the magic of the fediverse!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Anything on this list including Mastodon, Lemmy, Kbin, etc is part of the fediverse :)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Yup, and I'm commenting from kbin. The verse gets bigger every day.

Fellow kbinaut here.

I like how kbin in a way combines the thread feel of posts and the microblogging timeline of mastodon into one thing.

You can follow users from each platform as well and follow their posts as well.

Are there any Android apps you recommend for kbin? Kbin and mastodon seem like the apps available for it are more developed than the lemmy ones. Would like a way to keep track of communities on the phone. Right now I'm stuck to using browser, since didn't like the apps for lemmy too much yet.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Kbin is actually less than 6 months old on the public side and I’m sure mobile apps are on the forecast. I know there is an app in the works already too. Even lemmy is a little young in public use so any mobile apps are not as polished.

The apps being built are by others offering their time for the greater use of the fediverse.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So this is a pretty exciting time then to get to still experience the progress of all this at its infancy.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Absolutely! There’s a lot of community members and new ideas of things that should happen and. It as well. The federation between instances is what makes it new as well and there’s a lot of opinions as well.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I don't think there's an app for it, but you can install it as a web app. And it works pretty well.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (4 children)

@DarkTides yeah! they both work with activitypub!

I don't follow any groups/magazines/whatever directly from mastodon (because they'd clog my feed).

However, you can copy the post or comment links, paste them into the search bar in mastodon, and then boost/favourite/reply :)

It's a little bit awkward, but you get used to it.

Favourite in mastodon turns into an upvote on the lemmy/kbin side. Boost doesn't really do much on lemmy/kbin (yet) but does increase reach on the mastodon side as it always does.

And replies, naturally, show up as you'd expect :)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

It will be really cool when we start getting browser plug-ins improving interaction between such services

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I need to learn more about this stuff. Didn't know it was so connected.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

@DarkTides that's one of the great things about using an open protocol

sure the UX is basically non-existent, but it works!

hopefully a better client will happen eventually to make it easier for people to understand.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So by any chance do you know how I can access mastodon from lemmy?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@wason not sure about lemmy. i know kbin has support with its microblog functionality and how any post coming in from a remote server that isn't to a group goes to a "random" magazine

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Ok then. I hope they add something like that in the future. Thanks

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Is it possible for someone to build a mastodon client that can also display and follow Lemmy/kbin groups so that they display correctly? I would love to switch over to my defcon.social account and do everything from that profile.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Are you using the app or website

I'm new to the fediverse as well. I checked out a few other ones, Kbin, Mastadon, etc. I definitely like Lemmy the best. It's the most "Reddit like." Say what you may about Reddit, but it has some nice features.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If Reddit hadn't decided to make it impossible for third party apps to use the API then we'd all still be there. I honestly really miss it. I just cannot support a company that doesn't value people who have supported it (users, mods and developers).

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

Same here, I've learned a lot thanks to reddit and that's why I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the back.

Whenever I google something and need to access a Reddit link, I do it using Google's cache to minimize damages.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Though honestly the more I see about Reddit, the more glad I am to get away from them. I usually don't care much about politics especially when it comes to entertainment and media, but I just watched a video that was rather shocking about the antics that go on there.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Mastodon is pretty good to be honest. And I hated Twitter.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Do you have an Android Mastodon app you recommend? I see a bunch looking through F-droid.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I hope Tusky is not run by Elon Tusk ;D

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Big fan of Yuito (fork of Tusky) on the IzzyOnDroid F-Droid repo and Play Store

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Hello from Mastodon :)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Mastodon is Twatter/Facebook. Lemmy is Reddit

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Mastodon is Twitter, if you want facebook I'd recommend Friendica

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Then pixelfed and complete the holy trinity :D

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (8 children)

So, one of the cool things about the fediverse is that you can follow mastodon accounts from Lemmy or kbin or any other federated site and vice versa. Pick the service that has the UI you want (Mastadon is Twitter like, kbin and Lemmy are Reddit like) and keep an eye on everything!
