Any unlocked bicycle will be stolen within nanoseconds anywhere in Japan, ask me how I know lol
Also people keep mentioning the Yakuza here, but they hardly ever do violent street crime or anything anymore. They're mainly a group of elderly real estate sharks now, with a lot of their income coming from semi-legal things like パチンコ parlors (the English word gets filtered) and high interest loans to old people. What's more common as unambiguous crime are the "tokuryu" gangs, which are decentralized groups that do stuff like hire college students to do drug distribution or whatever, and it's all anonymous and through the internet. They're really bad and prey upon vulnerable people looking for work. A thing they'll do is ask for personal information or IDs, then use that as blackmail if their employees start to refuse jobs due to the risk or criminality of it. I believe a thing they'll do is escalate the types of crimes they'll get people to do, like doing drug sales or whatever at first, all the way up to robbery or assault.
Yeah Japan is really safe in regards to violent crime, there's hardly any of it, but it's not some crime free utopia. But maybe reactionaries see Japan as completely free of crime because the most common perpetrators and the most common victims of crimes are vulnerable poor people who have their poverty leveraged against them. That's not even getting into the fact that Japan's work culture itself is a crime or that Japanese women's rights are very poor compared to other industrialized nations. I'm sure Musk would also completely ignore how common white collar crime is in Japan, or misuse of public funds, or uh...misuse of tax incentives.
