I don't know how good or bad Patrick Stewart was....

But I loved the character of Captain Picard.

They are not the same thing.

He definitely embodied starfleet ideals on and off the screen, he was genuinely a good person

Years ago I saw some clips of him saying some cringe sleezy things to who ever he was with. I've seen clips of his sense of humor. He definitely wasn't trying to "embody starfleet ideals"

...so I think he was just a man off set. Like all actors, like any man. I wouldn't take that as some affront to Starfleet ideals... In fact it's more Starfleet to acknowledge he was just a human playing a role, so was a complete and flawed person outside of that idealized role (you know humanize him, give him his humanity)... Rather than to keep up this pretense that he was the embodiment of the character off and on set.

That's not how actors and acting works.

He may have been a good or bad man. I did not know him in daily life... And I don't think you did either. That's not something to be offended by.

Dude also played Vladimir Lenin in Fall of the Eagles and read his books for the role. And they still try to demonize him for something he said 14 years ago.

Oh, what did he say 14 years ago?

I believe the subject of this post is him appreciating Israel for their hospitality while filming something. He said something to the effect of enjoying the food and culture.

Polite fluff that I think literally any public figure would say while being a guest in a country.

He was an all around good dude. A philanthropist.

Have you ever thanked someone for something who ended up being not a great person? Yeah, it's not a big deal. That's basically what him thanking Israel amounts to.

Patrick Stewart was generally very kind and well liked in his field. He has also given very honest interviews where he admits that his career was most important thing in his life. Not with arrogance or pride but a sad self-understanding. There are elements of Picard in him, even if the whole of the man is not Picard.
