There was a lively discussion under the following post:

Under which, I received this reply in my inbox:

Both are now inaccessible, both from the lemmy.world I was accessing them through and after a fruitless search for the original post on their instance. All I see now, which you likely see as well, is an unspecified "Error!"

I perused their mod log but it's like the post (and its comments) no longer exist.

How would I investigate what happened myself, apart from asking their admins/mods? Is this an intentional act or a bug?

Just to confirm, deleted by the creator. (excessive blurring just as a habit since the author chose to delete it)

Thank you for looking into that. That would explain there not being a mod log entry about it. I wish I knew how to see that's what happened myself without bothering an admin, if possible.

Which helps me pivot onto my next point, which is probably not within your wheelhouse, but:

Why on Earth would all future viewing/replying to comments be generically "Error!"ed? I understand the post itself being pseudo-deleted for OPs' privacy's sake, but having a discussion pretend to not exist or be bugged because the OP we've forgotten long ago is frustrating - not to mention the frustration of figuring out what even happen; I imagine most people would just write this off as "lemmy servers suck" and move on.

Yep, lemmy dev wheelhouse not mine, and I will say that one of the nice things about being an admin is that I can see deleted items - for a while until they're permanently deleted. heh.

Design philosophy… I find it irritating that the comments I delete are still out there at all, so I've gotten in the habit of editing then deleting them.

The flip side - if we're comparing Lemmy to Reddit though - is that scoring you see is not fudged, and you can see your votes happen in real time. If there's a delay in applying the vote, the spinny stays until it happens. With reddit, I'd refresh to make sure my upvote stuck because a lot of times it didn't, just silently fail, and that was irritating.

So it just comes down to different devs making different choices, I suppose.

Yeah there's tons of upsides to Lemmy/the Fediverse over Reddit, in my opinion. We could cite a bunch of them.

This happens to be one of the downsides - unclear "Error!" which is just "OP deleted their post."
