This is a serious question, not fresh lemmy account bait.

So this morning I'm half awake logging in to WFH and I pull up a youtube video to listen to in the background. I pick from the front page youtube has organized for me (first mistake). I select a doomer slop video on new $55k/year AI "Alpha" schools. A random guy starts a video essay about this absurd ass school and I zone out for a bit, chuckling at the bullshit here and there while working before he gets to this wretched line: "I genuinely don't understand the push to get rid of humanity. Are we all so bad? Like I don't know, like outside of you know, maybe the Holocaust and the Guangxi Massacre and Sharknado 3-" Boy did that fucking wake me up like a slap to the face. What a nasty ass and deeply unserious comparison.

And of course this youtuber brings up the wiki page for "Guangxi Massacre" as if Wikipedia is the end all be all of truth and knowledge with no other sources. Just a running joke for a casual slop audience that has absolutely never even heard of Guangxi as a place, much less what happpened there. I tried to look up if anyone has talked about it here, but I didn't really get relevant results. The top google results waiver between calling the event "Guangxi Massacre", "Guangxi Civil War" and "Guangxi Campaign". If calling it a civil war in the question is problematic I apologize, I am genuinely ignorant on the actual history.

With that being said, I have some questions if no one knowledgeable minds answering:

  • What's the most accurate title to give the historical event?
  • How accurate are the top results for this historical event (like wikipedia and the Stanford pages)?
  • Does anyone know how China teaches this event modern day to students?
  • Can anyone please give me better recommendations for youtube channels?

I think I know part of the reason why this garbage appeared on my feed in the first place: video essays featuring doomer slop talking about all the little ways the USA sucks have gone really mainstream as this country keeps decaying and people are struggling to put food on the table. It's so mainstream that chuds and neoliberals are also getting in on the grift. So now chuds are appearing on my recommendations. Had one a couple weeks ago that wouldn't shut up about tattoo regrets and after awhile I was like.... oooooooh this isn't actually about removing crappy pokemon tattoos is it? I'm kind of mad at myself that I let it get this bad, smh. That's what I get for letting the algorithm do the thinking for me.

I believe OP/OOP is referring to the events during the cultural revolution: https://www.jstor.org/stable/27367662

It is likely that the Guangxi Campaign during the Chinese Civil War is creating the confusion in terminology.
