Abkhazia and South Ossetia are the Donbass of Georgia really long grains of separatism, except the Russians didn't wait 8 years and crushed the Georgian army when the war was first winding up, before NATO formed a proper strategy to arm and proxy-fy them.

NATO was arming and proxifying them already, but Georgia is too small and not suicidal enough for a long war.

Nothing about Georgia makes it un-suicidal, and combat in the mountains means you don't need quite as big a heap of men. Georgia simply was not armed & trained in the same way or timetable that they managed in Ukraine. Whether that was CIA arrogance or a lesser political commitment--you can decide. They got it right on the second try though. And Russia learned the exact opposite wrong lesson.

Georgia was also not as marinated in nationalism, so the general population was not willing to fight, so after losing the initial battles the leadership was forced to negotiate, while Ukraine has a strong fascist presence, who are able to lock the country on the full speed course into the iceberg.
