I made a mistake trying to use a wand of blast wave to trigger a plant effect (not sure if that works anyway) and knocked myself off a ledge, and then got resurrected with a non-blessed ankh. Looked around the level and eventually died, and when it then shows the full map I could see the backpack anywhere.

Is it possible it was hidden under another object, or does it appears on the level you fell from?

Ah, I see. I haven't died with an unblessed ankh in a long time. The backpack shouldn't be hidden. It should be exactly where you died, right?

The complication is I died* by falling, so there is no way to know where the first spawn point was, before respawning somewhere else

Totally talking out of my ass here, but everything else that falls down into the abyss is randomly placed on a level below.

If we follow the same logic, the death backpack should be randomly anywhere on a level below the one you fell from.

PS: sometimes objects do hide other objects beneath them, if you use the magnifier lens you should see the whole stack.

PPS: if it fell on a tombstone, you have to defeat the tombstone first to get it from under the tombstone. I would check this possibility last, although wraiths can be easy to surprise attack in the doorways and around the corners. I would just assume the best at first.

Yeah, after getting a full view is the level after properly dying it wasn't possible to check object stacks etc, but I guess that is the most likely explanation that it was under something

I just tested the stacks, and I was wrong. It can only show a mob and one item as a list of two. This happens often, so I assumed that list functionality covered everything. My bad. If there are multiple items on the same square, the magnifier only shows the top item.

Other than what we're talking about here, only two other options remain, that I can think of: read and understand the source code that's relevant to your issue, or ask a dev who is well familiar with the source code. I haven't looked at the source at all and just approach it strictly as a fan/player.

Good luck! I hope you find your backpack safe and sound.
