I won't go and vote.

In a place like Texas, it can feel pointless to go in vote if R's are going to sweep anyways. Good news like this can be used as a motivator to show people this election could be different.

People in line were talking about how busy it was (and how much busier it was yesterday). I asked someone who voted yesterday in a more suburb/rural area and they said there was practically no line there. So seems to match the optimism of this.

Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you (assuming you’re a Texan capable of voting)

This “it doesn’t matter” line is complete defeatist bullshit. You can’t gerrymander state office. Hinojosa can oust governor hot wheels if we get out there. Talarico has a good shot of people vote.

Trump won because of the nearly 1/3 of voters who “it can feel pointless”.

I’m Texan, I’m progressive and you can be damn sure I’m voting.

(assuming you’re a Texan capable of voting)

Given I have already voted (as referenced when I mentioned being in the voting line), I'm not capable of voting anymore in this election. I did have a worker comment that my photo on my ID doesn't look like me despite being from less than 2 years ago, but they didn't make it a problem.

This “it doesn’t matter” line is complete defeatist bullshit.

Agreed. That's what I was saying in my comment. That this type of news should be used to insist on the importance rather than just dismissing it.

Then why did you start with "I won't go and vote"?

From the beginning, that frames your comment as someone who's anti-voting explaining why it's pointless, which we already have too much of around here.

So the rest of your comment sounded confusing, almost like you went to the polls to talk with people in line but not cast a vote yourself.

If you already voted, good. But try to be clearer when you're encouraging people to vote so they don't think you're saying the opposite.

Then why did you start with “I won’t go and vote”?

As part of the joke that was followed up by implying I won't because I already did. People shouldn't wait if they're able to vote early. Anyways, apparently the punchline fell flat.

From the beginning, that frames your comment as someone who’s anti-voting explaining why it’s pointless

"Good news like this can be used as a motivator to show people this election could be different"? Not sure how this could possibly be anything other than encouraging people to vote.

So the rest of your comment sounded confusing, almost like you went to the polls to talk with people in line but not cast a vote yourself.

Only reason I'd have done that is if they denied my vote.

    Thanks for the explanation!

Yeah, the punchline wasn't very clear. And if the downvotes are any indication, I'm not the only one who read it that way.

It happens though, it's a learning experience, we can all move on without tripping each other up, because ultimately we seem to be on the same side here

Using Texas is not the example you think it is. Imaging living in Missouri and reading this, don't be ridiculous.

Huh? This is a thread about the elections in Texas. What does Missouri have to do with anything?

I think these comments are due to you saying you won't vote. Is it possible you have a typo in your original post?

Of course I'm not going to vote. Voting twice would be a crime.

Yes, that phrasing sounds weird. One would just say "I voted"

Did you think I was just hanging out in the voting line for fun?

Look, I'm just pointing out why people are responding to you this way. If you want to be a snarky dick then ok. I'm out.

I'm trying to figure out why it wasn't obvious I voted. The only explanation that makes sense to me is "I read the first few words and stopped and decided to reply anyways." Pretty much every reply just repeated what I said but acts like I said the opposite. What's the alternative reading?

I assumed there was a typo somewhere and just couldn't discern what was actually meant. It really does sound like you were just hanging out at the lines to gawp. No harm in changing the first line to make it more clear.

I generally oppose edits beyond minor typos (and you should leave an edit log if it was made more than a few seconds after posting). They make threads so much more confusing to follow, even if by simply clarifying the original confusing comment.

This whole back and forth has been describing exactly that.

  • So far, only one person has referenced the fact that I was in the voting lines at all and that was after I made the comment that your comment is a reply to. I've had no reason to believe anyone else had even read more than half of what I said in the parent comment: most of the rest have been people saying vague things like "Sorry I didn’t realize you had a learning disability."
