It really is that. I have more in common with my rascist dad than I do billionaires, in everything including thought processes.

I see the inequality and am upset; I blame the billionaires.

He sees the inequality and is upset; but he blames the immigrants.

We do not think like them. That doesn’t mean the think ‘better’. But at least my rascist dad still thinks white people are people instead of a number. He just can’t extend that decency to ‘others’.
