Regardless of the cause of the acceleration, this is an excellent example of why vehicles should be regulated so that they must stop, or at least not exceed some extremely low speed, after an impact is detected. We may not be able to prevent all incidents, but we can at least reduce their severity.

Then a vehicle on the highway gets hit by some pebbles in the wrong way and emergency brakes, leading to a huge mass accident.

Idk, maybe it could help if done properly (haha), but maybe a better start would be to reduce the size of most street monstertrucks nowadays?

I believe we are fully capable of programming a sensor that can tell the difference between a 1g pebble and a 50kg body.

Of course we should also mandate maximum vehicle sizes, maximum vehicle speeds, maximum vehicle weights, and reduce road widths, create modal filters and mazes of one-way streets, create car-free streets, etc, but I never said anything to the contrary. Even if you were to do all of those things, cars could still be used as weapons by those who wish to do so. It's part of a holistic set of interventions to reduce harm.

If thats the sole function, sure. But i heavily doubt that cramming more and more and more "safety" features helps all that much. I don't per se disagree with you but it irks me, a lot, if a car moves the steering wheel for me, so i am generally rather against more of that crap. (For the record: i'd rather not drive at all and we would, imo, be in a better world, if much less people would (need to) drive around so much)

it's actually really dangerous a lot of the time to pull over immediately after e.g. a deer strike. lots of rural roads with no shoulder and an unexpected slow or stopped car is a hazard to anyone else, and to you if you get out of your car to look at the damage.
