I was curious after I looked into this prop. Unlike the SAVE act, which would disenfranchise a lot of people, Prop 39 would require the state to give voter ID cards to everyone who requests one which resolves a big issue.

It sounds mostly good to me now, as it could somewhat strengthen confidence in elections, and many countries have a similar requirement. The only issues I can think of are:

  • This isn't really necessary, and is basically just a random hurdle
  • Somewhat expensive, for no major reason The biggest thing is
  • bending the knee to trump

Is there something I'm missing?

  • The only material thing it seems to do is create a new private cause of action that would allow anyone to challenge voter rolls. What does that look like in practice? The proposition text is silent on that.

  • It says the government shall use "best efforts" to verify citizenship using various records and databases. That's an unreasonably low standard and an unreasonably vague process.
