I don't think you speak for all Romanians
Majority of Romanians view Ceaușescu and communist era positively, study shows
Romania’s president has expressed concern after a new survey highlighted a growing sense of nostalgia for the communist era, with former totalitarian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu viewed positively by most Romanians.
The study, released this week, revealed that nearly 56% of Romanians believe the communist regime—widely regarded as one of the harshest of its era—brought more benefits than drawbacks to Romania.
A large majority of respondents—over 66%—told researchers they now regard former dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1965 to 1989, as a good leader.
The Institute for Public Opinion Polling (INSCOP) study, conducted with the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), suggests that nostalgia for the past is tied to widespread disenchantment around the country’s current prospects.
Just over 27% of respondents said they believed things in Romania are heading in a good direction, with more than 63% feeling that the country is on the wrong track.
Groups most likely to share positive sentiments about the communist era included the over-60s, people on lower incomes, and those living in the countryside or small towns. The same groups expressed the greatest disillusionment with present-day Romania.
In total, over 48% of Romanians said they believed life was better under communism.
