The idea that a government could accomplish something like that is alien to the USian mind. Canada's recent ban is very sus to me coming as it did on the heels of a shooting spree perpetrated by someone who was clearly a government informant of some kind. But the complete lack of action of mass gun bans in the US after Sandy Hook as many people point out is good evidence that we'd never get something like that in the states.
