Jack Smith is one of the few who actually cares about America instead of their own wallet or power. This guy is an actual hero but instead he is painted like he is some criminal and liar by the GOP. Americans should take before they vote what is happening here. They’re trying hard to cover shit up and silence this man or anyone else that want to blow the whistle on them. If you Americans are still too fucking blind to see that and STILL vote for Trump these midterms you guys are fucking lost forever. I have said Fuck America almost everyday since Trump became president. This November is you last fucking shot to put things right.

I’m sure you know this, but just for clarification’s sake: Trump is not on the ballot, he’ll still be president after November. What IS on the ballot is his party’s stranglehold on congress and the senate, and his ability to act with complete impunity.

You had my upvote until the second half when you veered into an unhinged rant as if the vast majority of americans here on the fediverse haven't already been against this administration all along.

Yeah, they frequently comment things like this, it's kind of their thing. They also say no one in America is doing anything, completely ignoring what the (bought and paid for) media here avoids reporting on.

I wonder if the global rise of fascism is affecting their country, and if they're doing anything about it. I'm sure they hold themselves to the same standards, right?

Thank you, exactly. Yelling at Lemmy libs who are altogether more likely to vote against the current administration than any other group I can personally name is a complete own goal, unless they're actively trying to get genuinely horrified Americans to get discouraged and not vote at all, which is another tactic I've seen here and personally called out I can't even count how many times.

Doesn't matter. I'm voting anyway, and spending less time where I can see that shit to begin with.

And for anyone who can look at their own country and see a diverse set of individuals, but has no problem with looking at another country and seeing only one great homogeneous caricature -- that they then screech at personally because yeah, that's gonna help so much -- I got a bag of dicks they can eat.

. . . while I go vote anything but R, and bring my neighbors too, lol.

Thank you. I feel so discouraged when I see people who should be our supporters, who spout things like 'fix your country', pick at an individual who is trying to make things better because they aren't working on their specific thing.

I just can't see any flavor of 'both sides' as anything but support for the oligarchs. The more people engaged, the more collective power we have and the less a few billionaires can control us. By engagement, I mean more than just voting: Join your local precinct and be or support the delegates that work their way up to the national conventions. This applies to democratic and republican alike.

Anything telling people their votes don't matter or won't change things only concentrates power in the people who already have it.

Well said. I could not agree more. And very few of these random "purity tests" -- where the liberal candidate is horrible, evil, gonna burn down the world because they do not have the right stance on [pick an issue] -- in online conversation ever come across as authentic or genuine to me; rather, they seem to all be using the same playbook and advancing the same talking points, same as it ever was.

For example, I have NEVER, not once, met a fellow American in real life who did not know exactly where they already stood on Trump or Biden by the time the 2024 elections rolled around. Maybe that's because I'm old, but we've all been firehosed with propaganda day in and day out since 2015, and any middle ground had already long disappeared. Maybe such individuals exist, but for me it would be a wild unicorn sighting.

Yet I'm also supposed to believe that people already opposed to Trump would turn on a dime, hold their noses, and vote for him because Kamala = genocide? Hardly. If you genuinely care about genocide you care about people, and in a country where entitled righties were screaming FUCK YOUR FEELINGS at me that was the magical enticement for me or someone like me to stop caring about real people and vote for the one man who very clearly cares about no one but himself at all? Lol, no. I never believed that and I do not now, and anyone who lives here knows why just from their own lived experience.

These new purity tests are just more of the same, and as we get closer to the midterms I am spending less and less time online overall: if we don't see it, it's useless to them, oligarch cash wasted, and that just makes my heart glad.

If votes didn't matter, the oligarchs would not be spending hundreds of millions of dollars to try to change and/or eliminate them.

First, I don’t care about your upvote. Second, I don’t know what the spread amongst the American people is here. 1 third voted for Trump, another third didn’t vote, the last third voted against Trump (give or take) Third, if you agree with the first part you should have been offended by the second part.

Accepting the steel of the midterms is just as bad as not voting. That’s rolling over and die

First, I don't care about your uninformed opinion, nor do I care about you saying fuck America everyday. Second, guess what? Most of us here say fuck America every day, too. Shocking, I know. Third, fascism is in your country right now. I'm sure you're doing something about that. You wouldn't be constantly saying that Americans are doing nothing while also not doing anything in your own country, right?

Everybody sees what’s happening in your country. The greatest country on earth. Land of the free, country of the brave. Policing the fucking planet. Making the world save for democracy. If you put yourself out there as the greatest fucking country, be the bravest, be the greatest, make the world save for democracy. All you guys are is fucking posers. Just keep doomscrolling Instagram and stfu r do something about your situation. What I’m doing? Protesting against climate change. Protesting against Israelian genocide.

I, and most Americans here on Lemmy, have never thought any of the things you just said about America being free, the greatest country on earth, etc, were true. That has always been propaganda. Propaganda that you seem to being using against the victims of the administration.

I've been to many massive protests about climate change and the Gaza genocide. It's almost like you have no idea what is going on here and are relying on billionaire propaganda to know what's happening, so you think nothing is happening. To me, you're the poser. Posing to be better than everyone here who has been against fascism and done the exact same actions as you. You're not any better, you don't hold yourself to the same standard as others.

Your country has fascism in it, and you're doing nothing about it because you're hyper fixated on shitting on other victims of fascism.

I've seen people complaining about Biden and Garland slow walking the prosecution. I haven't seen anyone complaining about Smith.

I have to agree with them on Garland and Biden. Those two fucked the pooch by being partisan in an attempt to appear nonpartisan.

Jack Smith might get a pass from me if Robert Mueller didn't royally fuck up his investigation in full view of Smith for pretty much the same reasons. Smith definitely saw the way that played out and still waited 3 years too long to say stuff like what is quoted in this headline. Good for him for saying it eventually but if he wanted it to matter he's way too late taking his stand and he should have known that better than anyone.

He was preparing a case to go to trial, one of the most important cases in American history. It's not a reality show. There was never an opportunity back then to make the statements he made this week. Frankly, most of that would have been the content of his opening statement to the court. When was the last time you heard a prosecutor give his opening statement to the media BEFORE he gave it to the court?

He never got the chance to say this stuff, mostly because Biden and Garland dithered and slow-walked the whole thing, compounded by Trump doing the one thing he's good at: manipulating the court schedule. That allowed MAGA to run out the clock, so Trump could cheat his way back into office and kill the investigations.

They should have gone after the 14th Amendment, Section 3 first, and disqualified him from holding office (as well as any other MAGA that supported him), and then gone after the criminal charges.

Yes, but also he should've seen what was happening and realized the court of public opinion was his only shot of making it to a real one. Yes, adopting their dirty tactics is "unethical" or whatever, but exigent circumstances...

I agree with most of what you said. However, I find it odd that you called it "one of the most important cases in American history" but also seem to be defending their decision to treat it much like any other case.

Trump is the best example there is that norms and precedent don't mean much. He loves using the system against his opponents and Smith didn't fight back against that at all. Again, he should have expected Trump's deny and delay tactics and took some action.

Fighting an opponent who uses the rules against you requires being creative with the rules. Instead of the bold action we needed we got timid deference to procedure. If Biden and Garland were the hold up then stand in front of the media and say that directly to the world. Force them to either get off their ass or fire you. Anything less is equivalent to letting Trump run out the clock, which is exactly what happened.

He's proving right now that he knows how to do this, which is why it's so frustrating that he didn't do it when it might have mattered.

In reality not treating it with norms would immediately give Trump ammo to torpedo the entire thing and rightfully call it unfair. You can argue for reform but unilaterally imposing changes to how the process works for a single individual, during the investigation, is not a thing.

Jack Smith has been saying the right things all along, you just haven't been paying attention.

And if you expected him to make public announcements about it when he was still conducting the investigation, then you don't understand how the US legal system works because that kind of shit can get solid evidence thrown out in court. He had to cross every t and dot every i in this case, and he did his due diligence. The only place it broke down was when the scotus punted the trial till after the election.

The insanity is a projection of your own condition.

You're saying (retroactively) that it was the wrong move, just because it failed? By that logic, we shouldn't even try to stop fascism, because if we fail then it was the wrong move.

That's a shit take if I've ever seen one.

Yes, plans that don't work out can retroactively be called the wrong decision because they failed. Of fucking course they can. The alternative is attempting the same thing over and over but expecting a different result, which is a popular description of insanity. You're ridiculing the fundamental process of learning and growth and seeming proud of it because you think its helping you win an argument. That might honestly be the dumbest thing I've seen someone do.

I have no interest in discussing things with someone who would rather double down with insane ideas then admit they were wrong.

You're the one who's wrong. Learning and growth doesn't mean abandoning every course of action the moment something goes wrong. It means identifying what went wrong and learning from that, not simply accepting whatever bs take some keyboard warrior on lemmy says you should take away from it.

If I were Jack Smith, my two main "lessons learned" would be this: be appointed to Special Counsel a year sooner, and work within a system where the Supreme Court doesn't actively delay court proceedings against the man who appointed 6 of of 9 of the sitting Justices.

Neither of which are things that Jack Smith had any control over. You might as well try telling poor people to just be born rich next time, for all the good your advice is worth.

Am I "ridiculing the fundamental process of learning and growth" by pointing out that that's a factor beyond their control, and they did nothing wrong by being born as they are?

Just because the Biden admin didn’t do shit doesn’t mean leftists think they’re the enemy

We can be mad about them not getting shit done in four fucking years and that doesn’t mean we think he should fucking be on trial by the people he failed to convict.

Your post, however, is a great example of what we mean when we say “lib take”

I’m not playing team sports here. Merrick Garland and Joe Biden were incredibly limp-dicked on this and are the reason we are where we are. They could have stopped this but they were afraid they would lose and they would be targeted for it. They were incredible cowards. Jack Smith put in the work but was ultimately silenced by his boss. He didn’t have to comply but that’s an even bigger risk to himself. None of this makes any of them the enemy.
