Elections are mainly spectacle to make people feel like this is a democracy and that they have agency. Its not a question of whether "America" is "progressive" enough, because the people of America are not even making the choice. They are merely affirming the choices of capital. Recognizing that its just spectacle and an illusion of choice is an important step of seeing thr system for what it is. This isn't a democracy for anyone but the capitalist class. To use the bad analogy though, if bleach is one of the two options why is there an election anyway? That in and of itself is enough to invalidate the process as illegitimate. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] GreatGrapeApe@reddthat.com 7 points 3 years ago Thank you for your response. We are having some luck with the latter as those racists have cost the town a bunch money recently and voters are pissed. permalink fedilink source parent
[–] ThereRisesARedStar@hexbear.net 4 points 3 years ago* (1 child) Im doing more than voting though. I never claimed you weren't, Im claiming that you're limiting political engagement solely to participating in bourgeois elections (voting, running, etc) Are you running for office yourself? No, I, a trans woman, am not running for school board while fascists are screaming about how all trans women are pedophiles. I would like to not get stochastic murdered. Are your candidates winning? Enough of them are that we are close to cementing power. I will point out that you did not interface with the bulk of my comment, which is about building power. How are you building community power? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] GreatGrapeApe@reddthat.com 1 point 3 years ago Right now Im in the suburbs so things like tenant unions are difficult since almost everyone owns their homes and right now the best path for the community is keeping fascists out of power while trying to get the overtly racist town board members out of office. [–] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 16 points 3 years ago (1 child) Its not a good analogy, but regardless of what we use, the truth is people have no choice what the options are.
