Far from sovereignty, but the US has historically had a vested interest in keeping Taiwan separate from China, regardless of what each other party wants. They've kept up just enough of a presence in the south China sea to deter a direct attack but not enough to guarantee true sovereignty, whether or not Taiwan actually wants it.
