Donald Trump asked the Smithsonian Institution to install a 30ft “Colossus statue” of George Washington outside the National Museum of American History, and a special exhibit honoring the nation’s first president, in a social media post late on Friday.

The president requested that the exhibit continue through February 2032, the 300th anniversary of Washington’s birth.

“He is easily America’s Greatest Hero. Without him, our Country and our Freedoms wouldn’t exist,” Trump posted on Truth Social as he flew to his golf course in Ireland.

The statue of Washington would replace the current Infinity sculpture by New York artist José de Rivera, commissioned by the federal government and installed in 1967.

And he can just do it without the parliamenarian, without a supermajority, without asking every member of the DEA first.

In theory, we have all these checks in place to stop this sort of thing. In practice, they only function to stop things that might help Americans.

In theory I don't think we really do though. When you get to a position as high as the president I think the assumption is that we wouldn't elect such an irresponsible insane moron.

I mean yes, there are checks and balances, but consider for a minute enforcement. The judicial branch barely has anything to compel somebody to behave.

Unfortunately we're in a position where the president will literally just say "make me." We're dealing with an unprecedented world where the leader of the country literally needs repercussions for his actions or he'll do whatever he pleases.

If you think we are anywhere near the antics of any other president you are insane.

I'm lamenting that our government, regardless of who is in charge, can only seem to accomplish evil actions and is stringing us all along with false promises of improvement that there's always some stupid flimsy excuse for not doing.

If you want to defend biden in that context because trump is worse, that's up to you. I think all that happens when you pretend half of the abusive system isn't rotten is complacency when the "good" half is in office.

We cannot defeat fascism if our leaders aren't interested in doing so.
