Belgium eliminated imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in August, driving an EU-wide reduction months ahead of a total ban, according to a new report published by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) think tank on Sept. 11.

"EU imports of Russian LNG fell 46% month-on-month to their lowest monthly volume since Russia's full-scale invasion began (in 2022)," reads CREA's latest report.

Belgium's weaning itself off Russian LNG leaves France, Spain, and the Netherlands as the remaining importers.

French ports accounted for 57% of the EU's total LNG imports. Levi explained that France's TotalEnergies energy company has an LNG import contract that will be terminated at the end of 2026.

In August 2026, Russia’s fossil fuel export revenues fell by 8% month-on-month to EUR 604 mn per day, while export volumes fell 7%, according to the report.

    Canadian LNG is slightly more expensive then Russia one, due to the longer transport. However it is much cheaper one a systems scale, as the Canadians do not use that money to threaten other countries.

    Canada signs landmark LNG energy deal with Germany

    It involves the shipping of one million tonnes per year of LNG from Ksi Lisims, a proposed project on British Columbia's coast, to Germany by its national energy utility company Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE).
