Yeah, if you've ever been to any beach in SoCal and looked at the richie rich houses crammed there it's immediately obvious that they are a terrible idea. Lots of them have pilings and plastic tarps draped over the hillside trying to stop erosion. Almost like building on a sand dune isn't smart.
