Normal? Probably not normal anywhere. The money and effort in farming usually isn't offset by the production of such a small plot. It would be more of a hobby. What is more common is a dedicated space for farming within a suburban area. Typically they have a shared area and you pay monthly for your plot. Either that or some people with a green thumb in urban areas can turn their high-rise apartment into quite the greenhouse.

When it comes to feeding the masses efficiently farmland is still the dominant and most efficient method in most countries.
