!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Is the m-word a slur for people with dwarfism? If so, what are more appropriate terms to use other than dwarf? (lemmy.world)

Edit: thank you for your comments, folks. I have my answers and appreciate you all's help.

I'm writing a story with a character with dwarfism, but fantasy-style dwarves already exist in this world so I'd like another word for her.

I may change it though because idk much about dwarfism and don't wanna risk her falling into any disrespectful stereotypes I'm not aware of.

The working word is "poytle" suggested by another, from my attempted portmanteau little+person=pertle. I like it and may use it.

I always feel weird when fantasy settings have references to things that are very specifically real world. How can you have champagne in a world without France. Lilliputian requires either the island of Lilliput to exist, or Johnathan Swift to have lived and written Gulliver’s Travels. And that would have been very very different because it was satirical commentary on the politics of Britain at the time of writing.
