The German nazis systematically targeted their political opponents first in the 1930s, too. And it's not an either/or situation, there's a lot of militant neonazis.

Yeah, Hitler gained popularity having the ever loving shit beat out of him by communists he picked fights with, and then going "look at what these violent communists have done! Something must be done about them!"
