We generally presume companies will choose not to do that to their own reputations, but apparently that presumption was wrong.

    With economies of scale you end up with basically one producer producing stuff for incredibly cheap. Take poultry for example, Tyson is like the only name you'll see at major retailers. Even most store brands are just relabeled Tyson product. So it really doesn't matter to them if they get a couple people sick, cause we're else you gunna go? Blackbird farms, and pay $38 a chicken? Not the very large majority of price sensitive people living paycheck to paycheck.
