I'm more passive. I'll give a friendly smile so it makes it easy for them to decide to say hello or not.
I've noticed that every new neighbor on my street is slightly more of a recluse than the last. I feel like the only one who actually leaves my house on foot each day. Everyone else takes the car every single time.
Speaking of cars, the street has slowly become long-term storage for oversized vehicles. There was once a courtesy of leaving the street free for guests and whatnot. The ones who really take the piss (e.g. unregistered cars anchored by cobwebs) get broken windscreens.
