I've heard a "news" segment discussing the popularity of ready made meals from the grocery store, but that does reflect reality or is it mere fiction? If it were the case: is it because they don't know how to cook at all? Is it due to lack of time left for meal preparation after work or due to cost of living so purchasing those is cheaper?
Both partners work in the majority of households in the US. This means that neither partner has a lot of time to dedicate to cooking without it infringing on their free time. Personally I cook a lot, and what that means is that I lose a good 4+ hours on my Sunday afternoon to chopping, cooking, and cleaning. If I wanted to do anything on Sunday, I wouldn't be able to cook for the week.
