My best friend? Gets the cash no questions asked.

If I needed additional follow ups, then he's not really my best friend.

I kinda disagree. I trust my best friend completely. I would still want to know the reason. My fear would be that he needs more help than just the money, and that he was afraid to ask for too much help, or enough money. He would get it anyways though

2k though? That's not a small chunk of change. That would wipe out a lot of people's savings. In the example it's nuking half your savings. What if your car blows up tomorrow and the dishwasher breaks?

That's the point of having savings. You could just as easily ask yourself what you would do if you spent 2k on car repairs and suddenly your friend urgently needs financial assistance the next day. If you need to spend that money, then you spend it. If you can't, then you deal with the consequences.

I can only answer for myself, but in that case then we're going to figure something out. It would be a shitty situation, but not one that can't be overcome with the power of friendship!

(Which sounds like a joke but nah really that's how that would work out)

    Those sound like American problems.

I have solid savings, don’t need a car, and can wash dishes just fine.

... You know there are places other than the US, right? It seems like a really unhealthy mindset to assume everything you can't personally relate to must therefore automatically be about America.
