I think that might be impossible. 4x games are basically Colonialism Simulators at their core. I don't thing there's a way to reconcile that with socialism.

I think a grand strategy game in which you create productive forces and handle international relations (and try not to get couped) in a young socialist nation would work just fine.

Two different genres. GSG is like Victoria, 4X is like Age of Empires. Stellaris is a rare example of a game which blends 4X and GSG together, but it's the only time Paradox development studios has ever touched the 4X genre.

Obviously Stellaris works really well as a game, so there's something there but idk how you would make colonialism socialist without the benefit of outer space terra nullius.

I am aware that GSGs such as Victoria and 4X games such as Civ are different genres (Age of Empires is an RTS game, btw).

I was just meaning to say that GSGs such as Victoria would work just fine as a simulation of socialist systems.

On the space 4X front, couldn't you just limit expansion to uninhabited worlds? Would that still be colonialism if there are no natives? And if you focus on peaceful, diplomacy-focused trade? Because I can totally imagine such a space game. Even if it would be an unusal game for its gerne. (Some of that is already possible in Stellaris)

Im not trying to gotcha you here I legit dont know if mere space "expansion" counts as colonialism if there are no native species ( I mean most planets arent gonna have intelligent life on them)

OH MY GOD I can't believe I'm so baked I mentally swapped Civ and AoE. Yes, I meant Civilization, lmao.

But yeah, we're in agreement. Having truly uninhabited worlds to expand to is what makes it not colonialism. That just wouldn't work for a game set on earth because there just wasn't really any uninhabited land to expand to.

Wouldn't it just be a reskin of MOO?

All the alien races represent different socialist tendencies, maybe a few races are capitalist (to feel less guilty about being more into the war fighting aspects... or just being a sicko going on a genocide run), AI has the same randomized "quirks" like MOO to keep the AI from immediately collaborating with the player on turn one, "politics" screens have more options that actually seem to have a sustained positive effect on relations, the victory condition isn't "you become the galactic overlord or you are exiled from the galaxy"... other things of that nature.
