I've never really torrented on linux idk can I just add it to steam and run with proton?

The most common experience I have trying to run games through wine, lutris, bottles, and half the time on steam, is I click the run program button and nothing happens. Literally zero feedback. Some methods get a microsecond of loading cursor. Anything where a program has to alter or update a directory is maddening. Like I got touhou 7 running through steam pretty easily but no chance of figuring out how to apply the English patch.

The one that finally made me boot windows again was project diablo 2. I actually got bottles to run the installer over its internal folder for diablo 2 and ran it once a year ago, but trying to do it again with recent version, I just couldn't trick bottles into running it again.

    Yep! I have the same thing happen all the time. I end up eventually figuring out a weird list of steps that work at least half the time, some of which are probably nothing but superstition and make no logical sense, but I do them every time because that specific list of steps is the only thing I know works and screwing one up can and has made it completely fail without feedback. And if it doesn't work, I'll try again, after a few repeats I'll reboot the whole system - because sometimes for Omnissiah knows why, that fixes it. That's a common Thing To Do on Windows, that isn't supposed to be necessary or even do any good on Linux, and yet.

    I swear, Linux makes me feel like a fucking WH40K tech priest, and not in a good way. But Winblows makes me feel like the guy asking for tech support who the AdMech consider dirt on their tank tracks, so.

    I find Linux frictionless as long as you stick to the programs in your "store" but beyond that it's a total crapshoot. Sometimes you google it and immediately find a command you can paste into the terminal to do exactly what you needed... Sometimes you spent 45 minutes setting something up only to click go and nothing at all happens.

    I'm running Mint. It mostly happens with video games made for Winblows running through Lutris, and usually gets worse/most unpredictable when mods and user generated content are involved. I've accepted that those kinds of factors are going to break shit. I'm not in the midst of trying to sort out any one issue - though it's good to know I can just kvetch about any given Linux problem on Hexbear and a helpful bear will try to find out what exactly is going on (that's what it usually means on the Internet when someone asks what distro I'm running) - I just wanted to rant.

    I doubt I know any more about it than you do, solidarity lol

    I dunno how long you've been using Linux but 5 years ago steam was trash compared to now, I can play almost everything in my library now.

    Haha, solidarity! Linux users who don't actually know anything about computers, unite! Lol. (Literally. I only just know enough to know I hate Winblows enough to use literally anything else, and that politically I like the FOSS philosophy.)

    Not that long, really. Couple years, I guess? Definitely wasn't around for the struggle years that got it its "serious computer understanders only" and "can't play games" reputation.

    I've been in a pattern of getting a new computer with Windows, enjoying the ease of use of windows until windows stopped working properly, or I left the laptop out in the rain (alcoholic for 12 years B)) after that I would go back to you some profoundly junky old computer and happily use Linux for years before ending up with another computer, using Windows for a while.

    I've been doing it since my parents bought me a laptop in 2007 that had absolutely no business attempting to run Windows Vista, so lots of "computer is for music, movies, irc and dungeon crawl stone soup" over the years.

    I remember clearly the first time I put mint on a old laptop and you didnt have to connect via ethernet to download shit to TRY to get the wifi working. It just worked. And it worked every time since then

    I'd say I only started using Linux because Winblows not working got on my last nerve, but truth be told, I did it as a political point, and only realised how awful Winblows is (for me, my sensory problems, and my control-freak tendencies with my personal technology) when I stopped using it for a while.

    See, that's the neat thing. You pick a good user friendly and popular distro, and shit just works, and when it doesn't, someone smarter than you on the distro's forum has probably already figured out a fix. And when shit does break, you can get a terminal command to fix it, instead of visual guides that tell you to press buttons that don't exist in that menu on your system - a problem I'd have a good half the times I tried to troubleshoot Winblows. So, I no longer use that awful thing, and I refuse to fix it for my relatives who suck at computers even more than I do.

    I provide my father-in-law the bimonthly service (~once every two months 🤓) of listening to him explain that people he's calling on his cell can't hear him. Then I tell him to call me, and reassure him that I can hear him just fine. Which is true.

    For someone who I recently noticed doesn't understand the concept of what the task bar represents and is always just clicking on the icon he wants next, he doesn't need help to argue on Facebook and YouTube comments.

    edit: windows 11 Is profoundly immoral and also bad quality software and when they force the switch it was the end of me ever using another Microsoft product

    Isn't that just the way of it? Older folks sure need technical help when it's something they don't want to figure out and can get you to deal with for them or get around not knowing, but when it comes to being Karens or practicing really bad "netiquette", magically it's easy for them... I'm lucky, my dad's pretty tech savvy, and my mum is embarrassed to ask people for tech help and usually tries him first, and I have a far more extroverted kid brother all the extended family ask for anything first. So I don't have to provide IT services to aging relatives.

    Yes. Winblows 11 is god awful and I refuse to ever use another Microslop product after that dumpster fire.
