If extraterrestrials exist, and they have some kind of FTL to travel between stars, then they are most likely some kind of comrades. Only through a mutually cooperative social structure would a species be able to achieve such capabilities.
Now if they are actually interested in studying our star system is a whole other matter. The best guess would be that they are probably not if they have come to know much at all about our species and its behavior on our planet.
These are the basic concepts of Posadism (sans the nuclear apocalypse stuff). If we want aliens to consider talking to us, we need to improve our relations with each other and all the other life forms on our planet. Only if we can achieve some form of global comradely relations will they maybe think it worth their time to interact with us.
I have honestly never been convinced by the posadist argument that only commies can break the light barrier, after all it was capitalists who first split the atom and immediately used it to commit war crimes to intimidate the reds
I think the point is that building world annihilating weapons is not an effective means to the achieving FTL tech. If we are still fighting wars and building weapons as the leading edge of scientific discovery and engineering, we are stuck in a literal dead end.
I take an eco view that they would be interested in our planet but not because of us. Because the whole thing is rich in an immense diversity of lifeforms to observe and study. Life is the rarest thing in the universe.
If anything we might get our shit rocked specifically to stop the rampant destruction and extinction that we are causing because alien scientists want to see & preserve that shit too.
Yes, this is well considered possibility. It would definitely be an interesting twist of the overly used invading aliens concept. It could also examine the various practices of humans attempting to do cooperative ecological development, like the archeological evidence of the Amazon being a massively curated food forest. Quite a fertile thought experiment to disentangle many elements of the human condition.
