The term hijack has more uses than just describing the physical act of taking control of a vehicle by force. The use in the title matches the 2nd definition given here (example A specifically)

    To take control of (something) without permission or authorization and use it for one's own purposes: dissidents who hijacked the town council; spammers who hijacked a computer network.

    She seems to have hijacked/taken control of the passengers' attention. She didn't take control of the plane. Very, very important difference.
