Fascists are more concerned with knowing all the lore and doing the cosplay correctly than understanding the context of the message or living the virtues as a modern person

[-] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Which the Bible explicitly calls out. Can't be bothered to research it in the scripture right now (I'm an agnostic these days) but it says it's better to revere God privately and mean it than to make a whole performance out of your faith just to look good.

[-] nickiwest@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Hey, fellow former Christian! Do you also find it infuriating that we know more about Jesus' teachings than literally every politician who claims to be a Christian?

Matthew 6 is all about this. People think the Sermon on the Mount was just the beatitudes, but Jesus spent more time talking about how wrong it is to make a show of your faith.

Matthew 6:1-4

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

And it keeps going.

Verily, and thank you for the quotation! 🙏😅

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Unfortunately, it's a classic case of self-contradiction. Both old and new testaments are full of calls to openly and explicitly praising God.

Cases in point:

  • God instructing Joshua to have the Israelite army, led by priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant and blowing rams' horns, march around the walled city of Jericho.

  • The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19–20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." and Mark 16:15: "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation."

it really isnt

do not brag about your prayer, thus staying away from pride

but help as many people as you can physically and spiritually

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

1 Timothy 2:

8 I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.

Bonus sexism later in the same chapter:

11 Let a woman learn in quietness with full submission. 12 But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

Keeping in mind this duty of love, and building on the preceding verse (21) that introduces this passage in Ephesians—“Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ”— John Paul II interpreted these passages slightly differently: in a context of “mutual submission.”

Although there’s an apparent contradiction in such language, since two people or things can’t be “put under” each other in the same respect, in this understanding we can interpret submission not as an ordering of authority but as the mutual regard and self-giving love that both husband and wife must practice in marriage. Paul is simply expressing that idea in two different ways, corresponding to the analogy of marriage with the relationship between Christ and his Church.

also, the first verse is just calling everyone in the world to pray

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

but as the mutual regard and self-giving love that both husband and wife must practice in marriage.

Absolute bullshit. The bible is relentlessly misogynistic.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

I just showed you how it is not

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

No, you didn't.

Why does Eve get the blame for the snake's lie when both she and Adam agreed to eat the fruit?

Why are women expected to be submissive to their husbands? You disgustingly pretend it's a two-way street, but it's not. The bible disproportionately favors men.

Why can't women preach?

Why were daughters considered property?

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago
  1. She doesn't, the blame is equally divided
  2. Its a two way street
  3. Church doctrine and tradition
  4. they werent
[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

She doesn't, the blame is equally divided

Fucking liar.

Genesis 3:

12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Yahweh God said to the woman, “What have you done?”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

17 To Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to your wife’s voice,

Explicitly, Eve gets the blame, and Adam is chastised for listening to a woman.

Its a two way street

No, it is not. The old testament includes many laws for women that do not apply to men, such as being compelled to marry their rapist.

1 Peter 3:

In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, 2 seeing your pure behavior in fear.

Does he mention husbands in the same chapter? Why, yes! And it confirms that women are inferior:

You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel

Stop ignoring misogyny. Stop serving a death cult.

Church doctrine and tradition

But it has always been wrong. So why does it continue?

they werent

They were. They were bought and sold. Non-virgins were treated like defective goods.

The more you defend the heinous shit, the more intolerable you reveal yourself to be.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago
  1. Genesis 3:17 Yet truly, to Adam, he said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, from which I instructed you that you should not eat, cursed is the land that you work. In hardship shall you eat from it, all the days of your life.

Adam is at fault for being tempted into sin.

  1. Verse?

1 Peter 3:2 as they consider with fear your chaste behavior.

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter toward them.

  1. It has not been wrong

  2. Verse?

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Adam is at fault for being tempted into sin.

No, he's at fault for listening to his wife. Is Eve at fault for listening to the snake? No, she gets blame directly.

Stop defending misogyny.

Verse?

Read your own goddam bible. And again, use full sentences. I have to do twice as much work figuring out what verse you're even asking for. Fucking shitstain.

Deuteronomy 22:

28 If a man finds a lady who is a virgin, who is not pledged to be married, grabs her and lies with her, and they are found, 29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the lady’s father fifty shekels of silver. She shall be his wife, because he has humbled her. He may not put her away all his days.

Do you know how I found that? I typed "rape victims sold to rapists verse" into a search engine. So easy, even you could probably do it.

1 Peter 3:2 as they consider with fear your chaste behavior.

Women feared their husbands beating them, raping them. Husbands feared their wives... withholding sex. That's what you call a 2-way street?

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter toward them.

Uh huh. Which shows a distinct difference compared to the language of the verse immediately before that one:

Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

That's verse 18. Does verse 19 say, "husbands, be in subjection to your wives"? Lol, no. Misogyny plain and clear.

It has not been wrong

It is absolutely wrong to assume that a person cannot teach due to their sex or gender.

Verse?

Use your words. Fuck it, use a search engine. But the passage I already quoted above from Deuteronomy is one example. It doesn't matter whether christ came to "fulfill" these heinous laws, why were they ever written at all?

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago
  1. The snake gets the blame directly

Genesis 3:14 And the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed among all living things, even the wild beasts of the earth. Upon your breast shall you travel, and the ground shall you eat, all the days of your life.

  1. Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man finds a girl who is a virgin, who does not have a betrothal, and, taking her, he lies with her, and the matter is brought to judgment

This isn't rape, just having sex outside of marriage with a non virgin

  1. That verse implies that the husbands, impressed by the righteous behavior of the wife would turn to Christ.

  2. Only men can become priests but women can become nuns, and by extension have leadership roles in the church. There are 3 or above women in the council that vets bishops.

  3. Mark 10:5 But Jesus responded by saying: “It was due to the hardness of your heart that he wrote that precept for you.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

The snake gets the blame directly

Let's see what the rest of the bible has to say.

2 Corinthians 11:

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

1 Timothy 2:

And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

Deuteronomy is describing a rape scenario. If you think this is consensual, you are more dangerous than I thought. Read that whole chapter.

23 If there is a young lady who is a virgin pledged to be married to a husband, and a man finds her in the city, and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones; the lady, because she didn’t cry, being in the city; and the man, because he has humbled his neighbor’s wife. So you shall remove the evil from among you.

She deserves to be stoned to death because she didn't scream loud enough while being sexually assaulted?

That verse implies that the husbands, impressed by the righteous behavior of the wife would turn to Christ.

What a wild interpretation. Silly me, I was reading the actual words.

How about the rest of the bible?

1 Corinthians 14:

The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

1 Corinthians 11:

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

Same chapter:

For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

1 Timothy 2:

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

Ephesians 5:

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Can you find as many equivalent verses for the men? And I mean equivalent, not false equivalences.

Only men can become priests but women can become nuns, and by extension have leadership roles in the church. There are 3 or above women in the council that vets bishops.

How stupidly sexist. Why hasn't this been updated now that we know women are as capable as men?

Mark 10:5 But Jesus responded by saying: “It was due to the hardness of your heart that he wrote that precept for you.

Did god harden that heart, like he did with pharaoh? Free will is impossible if god knows what will happen and creates everything. But apparently even that wasn't good enough because he's really bad at planning ahead, so sometimes he directly intervenes by changing our minds to suit his needs.

It is still baseless sexism, intolerable.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

these links explain why it isnt

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Hey FUCKFACE.

Can women teach in the same positions as men?

No?

THEN IT'S FUCKING SEXIST.

Apologetics do not alter reality. Stop making excuses for misogyny, you hateful coward.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

women and men are different. Not worse or better, different. This is something that modern physiology agrees on.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Just owning the sexism?

You are a bigot.

You serve a death cult.

Your beliefs are intolerable.

I'm glad humanity is outgrowing superstition. Catch up or get left behind, we're done letting you kill us.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

there is no sexism

read the links I sent you

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago
[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

women and men are different and have different bodies, yes

why do you think we need to have seperate clinical trials for men and women?

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Slimy shitbag.

The fuck does any of that have to do with forbidding women from speaking?

Your misogyny is unacceptable.

Your beliefs are intolerable.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 week ago

Paul was quoting a sexist phrase, this isnt a direct command, he rebukes this quote in the next verses

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago
[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 week ago

they cant be priests for the reasons provided in the link I sent you

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Sexism. Misogyny. Fuck you.

[-] FreeAZ@sopuli.xyz 0 points 3 weeks ago

I'm not christian, but that's not really a contradiction. According to the bible the best case scenario is for you to proclaim your faith to others while truly following the scripture. The part you're replying to just means that the "following the scripture" part is more important.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The part you’re replying to just means that the “following the scripture” part is more important.

The old testament is a constant call and refrain of prophets and kings denouncing a lack of piety, rallying the people to some triumphant reform, getting too comfortable, abandoning piety, and collapsing the society. Sometimes you get this cycle in a single generation. Other times it is used - for instance, with King David - to explain how sins of the patriarch doom the kingdom centuries later.

So much of scripture is people not following scripture and reconciling with the consequences. And then new people coming in to reaffirm and reform the old laws.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

How does anyone follow a scripture that contradicts itself?
