It's not electronics or machinery, it's a piece of forged or extruded materials, and a couple of pieces of plastic or glass, the cost is not high (in case of prescription glasses and special coatings the price will raise, but it will mostly be labour price, it's not something the manufacturer does permalink fedilink source parent [–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 child) Nearly 1k for frames? Fuck that. XD Mine were on sale. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] toofpic@lemmy.world 1 point 1 month ago Of course - the $900 was in the original comment, I was answering to a child comment. $900 sounds more like a cost of contacting a Chinese factory and producing a small batch of your unique sunglasses based on 3d model you've sent to them:) permalink fedilink source parent [–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 child) It's harder for people who go to the optometrist and get their glasses. The Luxoticca-owned insurance company makes them use the Luxoticca-owned optometrist that sells Luxoticca-owned frames with Luxoticca-owned lenses. Moat people don't even know you can ask the optometrist for your prescription so you can go buy frames and lenses from Zenni or Coastal. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] boudica@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children) Not sure where you're located but I'm pretty sure providing the prescription automatically is standard almost everywhere after an eye exam. I've worn glasses for decades and have gotten annual exams in all parts of the world. Always got a printout of my prescription and never had to ask. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] edible_funk@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago I'm US American, and everyone I know including me has had to specifically ask for a copy of the prescription, and they usually try to leave information like the PD off. It's scummy as fuck. permalink fedilink source parent [–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 point 1 month ago You have to specifically asknfor it in the US, and they act like it's a crazy request.
